How to charge for rented equipment

If a job requires specialized equipment you may not have a new studio that you must rent like a deck or Dolby box is it customary to add an additional margin when billing the customer?? Is it unreasonable to double to charge or perhaps add 10 and 10 or just bill what you were charged?

It all depends what type of work you do and what your clients are used to expect
for your rate. The important thing is to let your client know up front if there will be extra charges.

I do trailers and promos. LT/RT and AC3 encoding are fairly standard and I build that cost into my rates. Those are fairly inexpensive encoders so they have paid themselves off a few times over. Dolby E encoding I would charge extra for as it's an unusual request in my world.

Cost +10-20 % for rentals is not unusual. Doubling the cost seems a little excessive, but if your client will pay, do what the market will.

Definitely charge a percentage for special rentals. I've seen from 10 to 30% markup.

Don't forget the set up time. You need to bill for that.

yes, something like a Dolby E encode would usually be marked up from 10 to 30 percent, although a lot of people might not mention the additional equipment and instead bill as "Audio mix is XXX an hour, Audio Dolby E Encode is XXX an hour" as to not giveaway they dont own the equipment themselves
