Cliche Wind FX

Alright Slutz, I've been hearing this same wind effect for years and its driving me bat-**** insane. I've heard it in video games, movies, tv shows, everywhere. Its this howling mountaintop wind sound. Do you guys know what I'm talking about? If you do, is there a place I can download it? I looked on Sounddogs but didn't find it immediately and figured if anybody knew where I could get it it'd be you guys! Please help me find it so I can show everyone what has been driving me insane for so long.

The last two places I remember hearing it are Uncharted 2: Among theives and Valhalla Rising.

Thanks!

I assume you mean "Whistling Wind" from The Hollywood Edge, Premier Edition CD3, track 33. Unless I'm wrong, Hollywood Edge isn't on Sounddogs. You hear this one all the time.

The reason it's so ubiquitous is that it's a great recording. It pretty much conveys everything you need to know about the location...and it cuts through a mix like a hot (cold) knife through butter.

Look for "Yellow Sky" wind. It is the one you hear all the time.

Thanks, do you know of anywhere where I can JUST listen to that track and/or buy it?

It is about as recognizable as the Wilhelm Scream, and I am always in search of a good replacement for it.

Wasn't Yellow Sky originally from the Ten Commandments or some old cowboy movie from the 50's? It sounds like a mono optical recording to me, but every version I've heard is probably at least a 5th generation copy, so it's hard to tell. The last time I saw it cut into a session was back in the mid 90's. It's kind of the Wilhelm of winds.

The other one I hear a lot is Chicken Wire Wind, which I think was recorded by Doug Hemphill back when he was at Thundertracks about 20 years ago. It's a really good wind, though. Yellow Sky is a joke.

Still, how many viewers notice this repetition?

I'm torn; I'm as sick of some of these sounds as much as you all are, but if they work, they work.

I have to remember sometimes that I'm here to serve the story, not to look good in front of other sound designers. Hopefully I can do both...

As Oliver Stone once said on the dub stage, "I don't make movies for people who aren't paying attention".

I think a big part of trying to find new and unique sounds and approaches is just personal satisfaction and staying engaged in the process. Nothing is more boring than cutting or mixing the same old sh*t over and over, and I will also readily confess that it is still very important to me to be respected by my peers, even after 35 years in the business.

I have a G5 Dual 2.7 Gig computer...when the fan kicks on it has a fantastic whistling wind sound. It's always been in my machine closet so I never really heard it before.

I'll make a recording of it soon and give it a post.
