Pro Tools LE advice for Post...

Hello Everyone,

Does anyone use PT8 LE for TV post prod sound? My work is about to invest in a couple of AVID Video editing stations. We are looking at buying AVID Pro Tools LE to do the post prod sound.

What I am wondering is....is PTLE compatable with AVID video editing software - can you expert an AVID session into PT LE and all the audio will be in the correct place and you can also change fades, expand audio etc?

Any advice help opinions would be great!

THanks

Edday-- Since AVID 'is' Digidesign now... 'yes' compatibility would be a go.

And proper export/import still requires the know-how of the editors involved. It is NOT automatic

But... there are more qualified individuals who can speak about the AVID video editing ins and outs. I'm primarily involved with Final Cut productions.

Yes it's compatible, but some file name issues remain & out-put of picture should be easier than it is.

You will need the Complete Production Toolkit, or at least the DV Tool Kit2 to be able to import an OMF.

Yes, you'll need DV Tool Kit.

And before you pull the trigger make sure you understand the limitations of LE regarding delay compensation, machine control.

Who's gunna be driving this rig? What do they think? I imagine they'd sooner you bought PT HD. Perhaps they have their own rig they could set up there?

There was a sort of natural reverb when firing at the Behringer and it sounded sweet to my ears.

And that's why it is good to have more than one person on a forum!
Forgot that one... pretty important.

ANNNNNNNND: if they're going out and spending money on an AVID system, do NOT let them chinz out and not get you the AUDIO tools you need to do the job! (ie: DV Tool Kit, perhaps plugins, etc...)

I use PT LE at home with the Complete Production toolkit and feel like I get good results with it.

As mentioned, you will NEED the DV Toolkit at least and I enjoy the Complete Production kit.

When you export the OMF and bring it into ProTools you can select any and all automation you want to use or not use.

Your editor will almost certainly want faders to work with. So, you can get the 002 or 003 or get a rack version with a Command 8 (or larger board.) A used 003 with the DV Toolkit may be $2k or so on ebay. Complete production toolkit may kick it up another $500-1k from the DV. Buying from a dealer new will be quite a bit more expensive.

If I were buying a low-end setup that could do almost anything Post will need, I would look at the HD Omni ($3k), a used HD Core card ($1k) and a Command 8 ($600 on ebay). That will solve the Delay compensation issue and give you the flexibility to add more DSP power later if you want to get additional HD cards.
