X Factor UK

Was just watching X Factor, the new series. It's at the opening auditions at the moment and a few of the (really bad) contestants sound like there's some really really bad autotuning going on there. God knows why though!

Any one else watch it (i know i'm reaching here) and have the same experience?

I think many of us have developed autotune paranoia

Haha yes! That's very true, although in this case I could actually hear "stepping" on more than one contestant, and my flatmate could hear it too.

I'm glad I'm not going mad!!! The autotune sounded more like the vocoder from my old Korg Kaoss pad2 as well.....

There's already a thread or two about this, they're definitely autotuning the vocals

I miss the times when good vocals or instrumental parts were performed naturally. The most you could do was to use an Eventide Harmonizer to correct minor things. You were a singer or you were not a singer. You could play or not. Nowadays it seems that if you don´t use Autotune or Melodyne either you are a criminal or have a bad atitude towards the performers. Endless hours correcting what started wrong in the first place is not the right thing. I often hear: don´t worry, we´ll autotune it later! Like if it is some simple task of pressing a button and voilá! You start tuning one part and find yourself tuning everything. I think we need some form of contention. If you can´t sing or play an instrument, go home and learn. Precious studio time is much better employed at the service of creativity and making great recordings of great songs, not disguising some people´s inabilities to perform. ot to mention the artifacts generated by the process. Why will I bother spending money on good equipment and trying to get a good signal path, if then it will get f***** up and ending like a vocoder?

My two cents...

Hmmm sounds like it was done in post production then if that article's to be believed......... although their reason for it is a bit shady i feel - microphones?????

In any case I can imagine the autotune was a set and forget situation due to the turnaround time im sure the post mixers were under. I would have hated being asked to do that and mix the show in a day or so.
