Work your magic!

Howdy Guys and Gals.

I haven't gotten to dub yet on this film, but I wanted to see what the GS could do with this region. These lines got looped, so I'm not horribly worried, but either way... It's a nice challenge.

I'd love to hear what you guys come up with! I'll post something of my own soon.

Oh Andy I'd love to give that a go but I'm in doc hell right now with a Friday deadline. But I'll check back later!

I know. I'm in feature he'll right now. Reels 2-5 are done and ready to rock, but I'm yet to get reel 1 or 6 and I need this thing out by Sunday. Yikes! No sleep for the wicked.

Andy.

Maybe I have wax or "too much doc." in my ears today but... where's the problem in this clip you've uploaded?!?!?!?!

Sounds like typical location I get every day...

Now, let me get back to my OWN work here...feel free to enjoy this beauty in my doc.

Not really hearing too much wrong with it.

Yeah, if my shows were looped for something like that (an entire scene?)...

I'd love to post an example of a scene that is probably NOT going to be looped in my current feature... I'd love to have the audio you posted, Andy.

I ran some software on your clip, and here's what I came up with without digging out CEDAR. Just EQ and iZo RX.

Vis fx are here! Time to go!

The hum isn't an issue, it's that damn cloth. Maybe I'm too picky, I just loathe that cloth noise. On my monitors it sounds like someone put the mic between the sheet layers.

Saying in the best way possible:

You're too picky.

Then again, without seeing the shot...

Moving on!
G'night.

Same Movie, Different Scene. This one is a bit tougher to deal with.

Ok.
NOW we're talkin'!

Helllooooo ADR!

Remind me to dig up my scene where they shot in a room with a working pop machine...........

Here are two stabs of yours. EQ rolloff, notches, A is iZo RX and ducking, B is iZo RX and ducking and Waves X-Noise. No access to CEDAR at this point.

Rx DeHum, VPI Repair Filter, VPI Spectral DeHiss. I kept that traffic noise, or whatever it was.

I dunno, fellas, I think I win that round. But you did say you went hard on purpose and there were artifacts.
Serge: a bit much artifacting with what you did I feel.

Anyway, here's my POP MACHINE, fellas...

Right you are, Jeff. I hacked way further than I normally would have. I should have appended processed2 to the end of the file. So I processed it yet further and named it just that. Many of the artifacts were LF tonal in nature from hi-Q filter resonances, so I reduced the worst of those.

I like your Fix A. On its own, there’s room for refinement as far as the noise pumping and tonal bursts under Dx go, but would probably blend well within the context of a mix - a real situation. But speaking of artifacts, what’s up with Fix B?

Work your magic!

This is what I've wanted forever. A thread with bad audio made right.

I'll post my fixes tomorrow as I've been awake doing a make shift temp mix for 53 hours straight!

I used Q10 x2 and did a lot of notching for resonances and harmonics. Then I used two Cedar instances (one low and one mid) so I had more control over broadband stuff. Finally I used C4 to calm it all down a bit more and a Q10 to grab frequencies I didn't get earlier (9-11khz stuff).

Work your magic!

PS: the big issue with this clip is the main resonant frequencies are at 100-120 and 180-195. So notching these out kills dialogue. It's a tough one, but it can be saved.

The scene is: night, two kids in a car, windows open, over looking Los Angeles (make out point).

Ambiences: Dist traffic, Rumbles, light wind, wind through leaves, crickets, cicadas. *music- source Postal Service.

Aha. Yeah, Andy, sounds like you're a bit under the gun! I like what you described with 2xQ10... been there...

And righto, Serge--one can analyze DIA on its own but best in context with the mix.

Andy--yeah, I like your thread so that's why I posted some examples of other bad sound. Of course, to post things like that which will be ADRd isn't really fair, and one should post fix attempts as well.

Both things I posted HAD no ADR...
I'll have to post my fixes. I don't think I kept an 'after' of the pop machine except in the finished product. The buzz/room, though, I think I have somewhere. mm, no, maybe not. But I was able to turf it for sure. Sorry. I was able to "suitably reduce it".

Do you have access to the alternate audio takes? They usually match very well sonically and with a little Vocalign can work seamlessly.

Haha, no ADR there. The director wanted no ADR for these actors.

I was uber tough to clean, but it sounds good now.
