Low end sweeteners on SFX

Anyone know of a synth or toy that's good to use as a low end sweetener on SFX? I'm looking to add a bit of ommph on some SFX tracks for a sci fi film I'm designing and mixing.

Thanks.

waves offers MaxxBass

But also layering hit's and subs below the material will help as well... Just be careful that it's doesn't over power the top end - bass of this nature takes a lot of energy to produce. On challenged speakers it'll come off as a compression pump of the high end.

Fast transience can be done with signal generator. Maxxbass adds harmonic content lowender will do subharmonic. Low pass filter a bunch of different things until you find something you like.

For guns, explosions, quick stuff.. I sometimes just tap the SM58 sitting on my desk. (as a sweetener only, of course!)

+1 on the 120A! Jeff, I have two over at my studio if you want to hear them. Since I switch between two main studios though, I have to admit I've started to re-use MaxxBass (Also, RBass is very nice for bringing that below your gut boom to FX). One note is MaxxBass (and for the most part, all of Waves) sound like donkey ass (ummmm) if they're overloaded so be careful.

Lowpaased explosions or cannon fire works nice OR if your in protools v8 land, I've used their Vacuum synth to for some short, modulating tonal hits

The Recti-Fi plugin can be set up to act as a sub-harmonic synth. It works very well and comes bundled with a lot of Pro Tools systems.

Voxengo LF Max Punch

Voxengo's LF Max Punch is supergreat and cheap!
Has individual sat/comp/sub, etc... sections, is really tweakable and sounds good.
Also, Voxengo is a very nice company.

Amp Farm -- try something like a Mesa Boogie Dual Recto/Marshall Cab combo, either as an insert or on a parallel buss. With the parallel buss, you can keep the upper mids and highs "pretty" by using a steep LPF before Amp Farm.

Awesome, thanks everyone for the great replies. As far as oscillators, I'd like to do a oscillator sweep for a powering down of a machine, but I get clicks when I use the one in protools... anyone know how to achieve something like that? Varispeed?

Chris, love to check em out. I'll give you a call next time I'm in the neighborhood.

Thanks again!

Try Elastic Audio varispeed mode or Pitch 'n Time.

I'm a fan of Waves' LoAir. I also love that it can be bought a la carte, for $112.

If you have Soundminer, it has a "Varispeed Lever" built in. You have to take that audio and record it into PT (as opposed to the customary automatic "spot-import" routine) but it works really well.

That's not the case. I varispeed and spot sounds straight in from soundminer on a daily basis. Move the pitch bar, then press "s" to spot the sound (in its varispeeded form) into PT.

This is the answer.

the dbx box is the most organic sounding option to my ears.

Though, reFUSE has been saying "coming soon" on RTAS for a long time.... Let's hope they solve it!

Sure, if you leave the pitch bar in one spot. But to do what RecRoom wants...

... you have to drag the pitch down as the sound plays.

hes talking about doing a realtime performance of the slide and recording that into protools its cool sometimes to do this.

They are at beta testing phase so hopefully......although Waves LoAir for $100 is tempting
