Thread Starter | noise reduction to bring out dialog suggestions
I'm mixing a scene shot in a busy kitchen where they are interviewing the chef and there's a ridiculous amount of noise ( plates, pot&pans...). They sent me a stereo file so everything is mashed together. Short from reshooting, which is not possible...what are some of your suggestions to eliminate as much noise and bring out the the dialog ? I've done the usual by 1-using various NR from Waves, Waves Arts, Sonic. 2-duplicate the track and eq out the noise as much as possible and blend it in with the original, also mess around with the phase. Method 2 seems to work better but still not to my liking...suggestions |

Subtitle. It's all the rage these days (I'm a Survivor addict and can't believe some of the stuff they ARE subtitling---perfectly clear to my ears). And saves YOU some work and THEM some time and money on cleanup/fixing. (instead they spend it in titling) Jeff and I'd just try to USE eq, etc. rather than duplicate and then process, etc. Unless you're in a lav / boom situation with dual tracks, just eq the lines in question and 'T-T-T-T-that's reality tv folks!'

p.s., then slap them with a fish for giving you 'mashed together stereo tracks' thanks. on a serious note: not sure what you're working with without hearing, but: have you looked at trying to clip out the most offending clinks and clanks and surgically time-stretch/fade the surrounding dialogue in order to eliminate 'subliminally' some of the offensive clanks? I do that a lot as a regular course of events. |

The 'spectral editor' in iZotope-Rx can do some serious surgery.

Yes, yes it can. If you have the time to go in with your scalpel. I spent an entire day removing bird chirps from a day-for-night scene. NOT FUN. But it was cheaper to pay me to do that than bring in two actors to ADR a scene because robins were already chirping at 4am... Jeff |
