Bread and Butter Sound FX Library

I'm looking to do some sound design work for TV and Film. I currently have no FX libraries. Can you recommend me one or to to cover the basics. I have a budget of about €400 for this.
Thanks for your help.

Unless you have thousands of dollars to drop, I would buy a recorder like a Sony D50 or the Zoom h4n instead & start building exactly what you need.

A little over your price range, but the Hollywood Edge Premiere Edition library has been super useful for me thus far, though there are of course some elements that are hit or miss (as with any library).

More budget-friendly options would probably be the Hollywood Edge Sound Designer Toolkit.

I also use the Sound Ideas samples that came with Final Cut Studio, and you can check out their site to check out their collections and find one that works for you.

My other suggestion [as Dallas beat me to it] would be to grab a small flash recorder and go out to create your own library. You then walk away with sounds that no one else has, and it's really a lot of fun to do field recordings.

Tough spot to be in as a nice big pool to choose from makes it go easier. Going out to record everything you need is going to make it a long time to become functional let alone profitable.

Avery basic package like these guys offer might be of use:

Royalty Free Sound Effects Library

I've some ambs from there before and with a little shopping around you might see a collection of thigns for your kind of projects.

These guys have a lot of collections too:

You could try these websites

freesound :: home page

Soundsnap.com: High Quality Sound Effects and Loops

Haven't used them myself but could be worth a look.

Although I'm not a huge fan of the Sound Ideas library, for your budget, the XV library may be the way to go.

Sound Ideas XV Series Sound Effects

The effects don't have that much character and are a bit dated, but if you need a bread and butter library for that price it should do it.

Looks like they're having a summer sale right now on that library.

The last I checked Leonard Groot at Top Format is the distributor for Sound Ideas in Europe. If you are in Europe then it may be cheaper to get in touch with him.

Hollywood Edge also has "The Edge" series. It's about 8 discs or so, a decent variety of sounds -- designed as a starter collection. You can get a track listing on the website.

You won't get a very complete library for that kind of money. I would suggest buying specific DVD collections as needed and record as much stuff as you can yourself. Figure out the stuff that is expensive or impractical to record yourself, like complete car series or guns and buy those, but record things like traffic, birds, bg car bys, doors and easily accessible household sounds yourself.

You can see what's available at places like http://www.sounddogs.com/ which carries a lot of commercial DVDs and also you can buy individual sound FX as well. Don't forget to check out the boutique collections available from some of the Gearslutz who are regular posters. This thread will direct you to their sites http://www.gearslutz.com/board/f97/n...es-489796.html
