Thread Starter | M-Audio Bx8A Deluxe vs. Genelec 8020
hi all, first off I know the title subject probably sound like a no brainer, as Genelec are in a different league than M-Audio, especially the Bx series...but I'll get to the point of this post. I'm selling a number of pieces of equipment because I need to get some small monitors that are more accurate for documentary sound and sound design, audio restoration etc. Thanks to everyone who replied to my recent post about "Small Accurate Monitors for Doc Work, on a budget" recently, I think I've settled on a pair of Genelec 8020s because of the price, quality, size, reputation etc. I guess the only thing I'd like to hear from anyone who knows, is some reassurance that getting rid of the M-Audio's to work toward a set of the 8020s is going to be a significant upgrade (worth looking forward to)...I know I'm loosing a bunch of power/bass to start, but it seems like on average the power of the BX8As was never utilized anyway...plus I need the accuracy and reasonable flatness. thanks! I think that you made the right decison to get rid of the BX8As. As a current owner of a pair ( $80 on craigslist) I am rather dissatisfied with the accuracy. Those genelecs are gonna be up your alley, like you said you'll be sacrificing power, but what you get out is gonna be true. Plus your doing documentaries, so you don't really need the extreme low end frequencies.

I work on the genelec 80*0 range every day. If you can afford it, get one or two sizes bigger. the tracklay suites i work in have 8030s and I find them quite harsh on dialogues (8020s are smaller) and lack detail in the bottom range IMO, however the mixing rooms use 8050s and sound very nice and rounded although are rather expensive, but just to give some perspective on the range...... Just my 2 FF |

thanks for the advice guys, I'd aim to get a sub with the 8020s down the road, the problem is mainly in my budget as is current, so staying under $1k is painfully necessary...I'm almost close to saying "sod it" and getting a pair of AKG k702 headphones or some other hi-end phones and just saving for a later date, the problem comes with having to share work with clients, you want to hear what they're hearing live. cheers |

I use the 8020's everyday as part of a 5.1 setup - not sure I'd agree with the other opinions the overly harsh comments - for tv I actually like this brighter quality. I agree, they don't pack the biggest bass kick but with a sub and calibrated system it makes up for it. Although, if budget is an issue and you can't pair with a sub for a better bass response, maybe pushing to the next model is a better idea I don't have a big room so they've plenty of power for what I need right now |

I say get the genny's and go for an old pair of JBL 43 or 44 series to check the low end.
