Difference between 29,97 DF and 30 DF framerate

Hello there,

I have a question to the framerate guru's here, about a thing that has been bugging me quite some time.

I'm pretty familiar with the differences and reasons to use "regular" 30 fps, 29.97 NDF and 29.97 DF.
I've noticed though that some DAW's offer the option of working in 30 fps Drop Frame. It is my understanding that 30 fps shoudln't need dropping frames, as 30 is a whole number. Yet the option still exists. The difference I noticed if you switch between 29.97 DF and 30 DFD is one frame.

My question is, why does that 30 fps Drop Frame exist?
Is it due to some former confusion? Some people talking about 30 DF instead of using the "official" 29.97 number. Which doesn't explain why there's that 1 frame offset.

So, where does this magical 30DF come from, and in what (I imagine rare) situation would it be used?

Enlighten me
