Thread Starter | New to the forum. Looking to gear up.
Hey all. My name's Shorty, and I'm a noob. Here's my story. A friend of mine got me into post production. Haven't really tried it yet, but I watched her work with it and it looks like a blast. I have a bit of a background in sound, but it seems like audio post is a whole different story, and I have no idea where to begin. So I ask all you kind folk.... Where do I begin? I'd like to teach myself as much as I can. I want to start recording foley and such. Sound design. You know... all the good, fun stuff that comes with post. What should I get to get me started? Programs and gear and whatnot... I want to get a kit set up that's somewhat portable so I can easily take it into the field. Please keep in mind, I'm a broke college kid and I cant afford to be doing top of the line productions. But I want enough to be effective and not have my work sound like a 5 year old did it. FYI.... current "gear" list. (it's pathetic, i know....) Macbook Pro with Pro Tools M-Powered 8 Essentials, Logic Studio, Final Cut Studio, and Adobe Master Collection Zoom H4N (portable phantom power ftw) ATH-2020 USB microphone So... Anyone with the patience have any ideas for me? |

My advice, don't rush out and buy things you don't know you need or want. Find out what you'd like to do, then SLOWLY build kit around it. The industry is amazingly expensive and it's sucks to be cut short because you saw an ad for the next amazing widget. Try and read several books first, get an idea of the scope and duty each person performs. You'd be safe at this point buying a computer, but then decide what software package you'd like. If pro tools... I'd stay away from M-Powered. Ditch that final cut pro and get yourself a 003 rack or mbox pro and the dv toolkit. FCP is nice, but as audio guys, we mostly use it for ac3 encoding. always good to learn the other side (video editing), but if you're serious about sound then immerse yourself in it and learn till you feel somewhat confident. good luck |
