noise reduction

primarily for cleaning up unwanted background noise from recordings from my sony m10 portable(not hums or buzzing, mainly distant sounds that enter the recording from a slightly high gain setting)...I see dinr, izotope and digi no noise - any experiences thoughts?

you might try a shelving EQ with a 3db cut at 8k. if the problem is just preamp noise...

"anything that works for you" (in terms of plugs)
Personally a big fan of iZotope RX and Waves X-Noise
(I haven't used the iZo Pro nor Z-Noise so can't compare)

but sometimes (like just yesterday) the stuff is so broadband that you are really hooped.

+1 for the iZotope RX

X-Noise is ok too, but for $300 the iZotope is a steal.

I like combination of EQ, expander/gate, and noise reduction.

A good EQ will do well too. Combine that with careful, or multiple careful passes of noise reduction, of which Izotope RX is of excellent quality(and price), and if necessary some multiband gating, and you're likely to get good results. It's always work.

I've had good results using the restoration tools in Adobe Audition 3 when applied gently over 2 or 3 passes.

I missed this somehow - this worked great on fx I was recording in a very controlled environment for.

Do you have any other tricks up your sleeve for spontaneous recordings that have a tiny bit of something like a quiet car passing by a few floors below that crept through the window as I turned up the gain a bit?

for non-periodic noises it would be probably quickest to run the sound through a spectrum analyzer and see where its energy is, and then do a relative soft parametric cut for it- for noise reduction purposes, it is tough to cut more than about 6db of anything before it is apparent that you are eq'ing. going with softer q settings will help, but the area of the cut will be broader.

I see , so the noise reduction plugs out there are really for specific types of noise (hums, AC noise, clicks etc)

Noise reduction is going to be better suited to remove what you said- steady state noise, buzz, clicks, etc- things like airplanes or traffic noise might be more difficult since it is more of a transitory sort of sound.
