Thread Starter | help cleaning up this spoken word transfer
a client asked me today if there's anything i can do to rescue this spoken word audio. it's about 2 minutes long and was captured from video tape. it's not a noise issue, it's just totally garbled, smeary.. and LOW quality. here's a couple seconds of a clip, so you know what i'm dealing with: http://www.12k.com/clients/12k/250E.aif any suggestions of what to try? thanks!!

Absolutely Yuck. Transcribe it and re-record it? Hand it over to forensic audio perhaps? That's pretty gnarly.

yeah, i'm not sure what to do. re-recording isn't a possibility because it's a commencement speech of a well-known public figure. i may have to tell them there's nothing i can do... i mean, some extreme surgical EQ could probably get rid of some of the ringing and smeariness.. at a loss of clarity, perhaps... thanks for listening! |

There's probably not a lot you can do with THAT... but it DOES sound like maybe someone already went to town with some Noise Reduction (like a video editor with Soundtrack Pro maybe?). That ringing "underwater" sound sounds a lot like an overdone NR process... Could there be an original version on a tape somewhere that might give you more options?

Yeah, it definitely sounds like someone played with it and made a bigger mess. I've pulled things off of VHS tape that fell into a pool that sounded better. Try to track down the original and re-transfer it from a trusted, good condition machine.

this was so terrible i had to give it a try! i don't know that my results make it anymore intelligible, but perhaps subtitles will end up being the best solution!

haha.. yeah, it's like you can't believe how bad it is and get yourself on a mission to better the world... ![]() thanks for the stab at it... sort of got rid of some of the smearing but introduced some other, albeit less annoying, problems... the client JUST sent me some pre-processed audio i think.. it's in my email now.. i've got to check it out.. |
