I remember the first I heard a real gun fired. I was like "that's it really?"

I've spent so much time on dub stages in my life that sometimes I'm not even sure which is real anymore. It's kind of like Alice Through the Looking Glass, you just have to make your peace with absurdity and pretend it's real.

They forgot my favorite, that bullets magically disappear after they hit something. So if you're standing in a cement room and people are shooting at you with machine guns, as long as they don't hit you you're fine- no worries about being torn apart by shrapnel or any other inconveniences.

LOL!!! I once took a small piece of brass fragment, a tiny piece of a .44 Magnum jacket, right between my eyebrows just above the bridge of my shooting glasses. It was a ricochet from about 30' off the back wall at an indoor range I was shooting at. They had to pull it out with needlenose pliers.

As far as what real guns sound like compared to movie guns, obviously movie loads are reduced-partial charge loads. I think they have to use extra light recoil springs on the weapons so the slides can cycle subsequent rounds.

Talking about slides. This is where a fair deal of sound comes from in a suppressed pistol, as well as the empty hitting the ground. There is a device called a KAC slide lock that locks the slide for a much quieter "PHUT"!!

Using subsonic ammo will help also.

Take a look at this video and determine whether a suppressor equipped pistol goes "PHUT" or not. YouTube - Suppressed Beretta M9 MK12 D.E.L.T.A This is 9mm, a .22 is even more "PHUTTY"

LOL...... sorry to get all serious about it. I loved the first post, the 5 Ridiculous Gun Myths. As far as never reloading......Did anyone see Sly mow down the bad actors in the most recent Rambo? He had a .50Cal.......it just went on and on, and on, and on.......LOL he must have dispatched 300 enemies.

This is the silenced weapon that I use a lot for impacts.... it is very quiet- and shoots .45ACP....

we can shoot these from about 70 ft away and the report is totally silent- you do hear the hammer drop though.

Problem with those is they emit an annoying chainsaw sound when not shooting. Hard to sneak up on a victim with that. Or maybe it's diversion? Hard to imagine that working when walking down the hallway in an empty hotel in the desert.......

My main issue with guns in film/TV is that they make metallic clinking/clanking noise whenever they are simply picked-up/handled. Drives me nuts. The same can be said for swords and knives. Ever since Kill Bill (as far as I can recall) blades ring and shwing at all times. And they always seem to "sing" a bit as well. Ugh. and of course, all doors squeak, brakes squeal, yadda yadda. Guess its here to stay.

but on a serious note- the helicopter PA dialog on GTA3 is absolutely hysterical... as is most of the dialog in general.

here's one..... you can hide behind a car door and be safe.... tell you what. YOU get behind the door. I'll get behind the engine block. I've fired a .45 cal handgun and it not only went through the drivers side door, it went the rest of the way through the car and out through the passenger side door and into the hill behind the car.

how about the bullet proof vest one? I wear a bullet RESISTANT vest when I patrol with the NYPD. It's good for maybe a 22 or a 38.... but some perp puts a 45 up to my chest and its not gonna help much. and guess what... a Knife will go straight through a bullet resistant vest.

Or the one that I like the most....guy shoots perp with 45... perp goes flying back into the wall.... Hey! anyone ever hear of Physics? if the bullet has that much force the shooter is taking a flying ride backwards as well.

cheers

you should see the hole a Solothurn 20mm will leave as it exits a car after going through the engine block- it is about 6 inches across.....

As to the whole physics of bullet wounds- most things short of a .408 Cheytec will go more or less straight through- If you get up into .50BMG land (like the Barrett M82), body parts start disappearing when hit. That is a level of kinetic energy that is quite impressive- And that is with the projectile traveling 1000 yards.

Next up, let's talk about real life vs. movie hand grenades. Believe me, there's a difference there too.

Hey, look at how studios/computers/gear, and/or the lives/behavior of those who use the same are portrayed in movies!

(Do you think they get it right about anything else?)

It's kind of like growing up on roaring spaceship engines from STAR WARS and realizing that there is no sound in space! Or, you can think of it as hyper-reality, where movies heighten the sensation of say, a match strike.

My first indie feature used real weapons (22's, 38's and shotguns) firing blank rounds. I wanted the reality of the actual gunfire sounds and kept most of that in. Some of it sounded decent, but I did catch some flack for not having rifles sound like cannons!

Loved the part about taking cover behind thin car doors and exploding gas tanks!

They talked about the 4 second sustain fire of a 32 round mag, but there are larger mags, like the 200 round Super Glock!

This info is very good for playing against audience expectations. Next time I show a machine gun toting crook hiding behind a car door, I'm going to have the good guy fire one shot from his Glock 9mm right through it.

Can say I've been present, sadly, to hear a haymaker sucker-punch that had the most sickening sound. THAT was a real punch. Pretty distinct.

Now then let's bring up those pesky computers in tv shows and movies that make all kinds of interesting sounds, especially like on the CSI-type shows when they're constantly analyzing and spitting out data.

I make those sounds all the time with my mouth when I'm running noise reduction plugins on dia while I wait for the process to finish...chuckle...
