Huge drum sounds for action sequences?

Can anyone recommend or point me in the direction of some good 'action' sequence drum samples that I can download please?

Free downloads I don't know, but the go-to big drum library is still Stormdrums from EastWest, especially the revised version 2 + the Pro addon. It's currently on special till June 30th. You won't regret it.

True Strike 1 and 2 in conjunction with Storm drums.

Also, MB Gordy just came out with his own library on Big Fish Called "Cinematic Percussion". Those loops and one shots are pretty good too.

Big Fish also has a CD called "Epic Drums" that is right up this alley too. Check them all out.

"We were working on Raiders [of the Lost Ark]. He [Ben Burt] told me that the sound source for opening the lid of the ark in the last reel was within 20'. I couldn't figure it out. It turned out to be lifting the back off the toilet above the water chamber, and slowing it down." -Tomlinson Holman

I use Stormdrum 2, I highly recommend it. Huge sounds when you need them.

Omnisphere

since this is pretty much the most generic type of composition that composers are asked to do these days (nothing against those who do it really well), it might be cool to come up with some sounds of your own. Like get a Timpani Mallet, go to the dump, and record the sound of you slamming on some dumpsters. I'm not joking - I did this and have gotten some cool results.

Good luck -

How about we start a fund that goes to a composer who has a creative idea for an action sequence.

After about 8 years of mixing "big drums" as the action sequence "score", it's more than run the course.

Even the names of the cues and loops have a complete lack of innovation. Things like "big action drums" and "huge action beats".

Oh a fund, that's a good idea...especially as the composer will need it when the studio chucks the score out after the 15th NRG screening. :-)
