if only one adr mic, short or long shotgun?

Hey guys. About to do my first ADR session on a shortt film. I know that when selecting a mic for ADR, I should try to match the mic used in production. I currently don't have any shotguns, and have a budget under $250. If I can only buy one shotgun for general ADR should I go with a short or long? Thanks

Since the only options for that money are a rode NTG-2 or an AUDIO TECHNICA AT897 your choices are limited.

On professional shoots people use Sennheiser MKH60 or 70 MKH 416, Neumman KMR81/82 or Sanken when it comes to shotguns.

But they cost about 5-9 times more.

It´s not about short or long. It´s about matching to what is used on set.

I understand being so limited will make it difficult to match production recordings. I guess what I am looking to find out is would the wider polar pattern of a short mic be preferred over the narrower pattern of a long shotgun, when trying to match a wide array of dialogue takes?

Neither really...

If your budget is limited, consider RENTING the appropriate mic(s) for the sessions. You'll probably spend less money, and the client will be a lot happier in the end.

Also be sure to check out the ADR sticky on the DUC. Excellent advice there.
