Most Stable OS/PT Combo...

After some frustration over frequent crashing with 8.0.3cs2 on SL 10.6.3 (I accidentally updated) I'm doing a clean wipe and re-install - I really prefer 8 to 7.4 but not if it's going to cause me problems bringing my sessions onto other machines. (I hear the save as version 7 can be a bit buggy)

Any thoughts? I'm either going back to Leopard and 7.4.2 or back to SL 10.6.2 and 8.0.3

EDIT: it's worth mentioning that i'm on a usb m-box 2 mini if that could be affecting stability

I am using 8.0.3cs2 (+ CPTK) on a hack (i5, Gigabyte) with SL 10.6.3 and it's rock stable.
Post production work with video, few plug ins but lots of tracks and small regions.
I would check your system with another interface just to be sure.
Best of luck.

I wonder if the USB mbox could be to blame

Most stable pro tools / mac OS?
Um, OS 9.1.1 and pro tools 5.1?

I'm an anomaly, folks, so will admittedly say that.
I don't switch to newer versions until I absolutely have to.
Currently running PT 6.4.1 / 10.3.9 on a number of edit machines and 7.2 / 10.4.11 on mix machines.

My saying, sadly, (and others will refute) is "I'll let the others work all the bugs out..."

Actually SoundTools under System 6 was pretty good! What's that old IT saying? Any system that's had all it's bugs fixed is obsolete...

I'm running 10.5.8 with 8.0.1cs1 under HD at the studio and LE under 10.5.8 at whatever the last 8.0.1 cs update was in the transfer room and at home - Mbox and 002 respectively. As stable as any of the OS X versions I've had. Odd crash here and there, but nothing major.

thanks for jumping in - any reason you haven't jumped to SL and 8.0.3?

The studio systems haven't jumped to SL because we still have a G5 in our second mix room, and I want to keep parity. Also when 8.0.3 came out there seemed to be a number of issues here on the board, and since I didn't really NEED anything it offered. I decided to stay.

The home system is still there because I like to maintain parity with my studio system... plus it's been too busy to sustain a full update!

In my facility I like to maintain parody.

The most? How long is a piece of string?

Read all the compatibility documents, do your home work, maintain a clean system, stick to approved systems, always backup, clone your system, learn how to maintain your system, make sure all your plug-ins are up to date.

I don't have a most stable, only ones that have been pretty stable:

OS 9., PT 5.3.1cs11
OS 10.4.2 PT 6.4.x (or whatever the last OSX Mix system was)
OS 10.4.11 PT 7.3.1cs8
OS 10.5.8 PT 8.0.3cs1

Take yer pic. They all work.

Big up on the Ministry of Silly Walks ref lol...

I just downgraded to 10.5.8 from SL and am slowly installing my old stuff - Is 8.0.3cs1 pretty safe (compared to 8.0.1 as was recommended earlier?)

It's certainly not Windows Vista.. I can say that much!

10.5.8 has been doing just fine for the Mac side of things for me. No problems whatsoever with PT 8. I wouldn't switch back to PT 7 without a very good reason. I just enjoy everything that 8 offers too much.

that might be your problem right there... if you use the built in OS software update it's a known problem. You have to download the combo updates from the mac website.

Live and learn...I formatted, went back to 10.5.8 and am running 8.0.1 without a problem (any reason I should go to a cs?) I've slowly been installing plugins in the hopes I can catch any that are tripping me up - so far, T-racks 3 is the only definite gremlin in the machine.

CS updates are *generally* a good idea. They usually fix important things and rarely break anything.I'm on 10.5.8 with pt 8.0.1cs2 and it's pretty stable. some relinking issues that are annoying.
