Monitor Budget

Hi Guys, sorry for this silly question.

I usually do my mix work on big studios; now days I want to buy a nice 5.1 monitor system. My target is to do editing and tv mix, but on a tight budget.

My main question is: buy a 5.1 of small monitros like the ones HS50; KRK rokit; Tannoy Reveal 5A or buy a nice LCR of good and more robust speakers?

Remember I`m targeting editing and at least TV mix. When I need to do a Feature Film I will move to a real Theater Dub Stage.

thanks for all your advices.

You don't mention the budget.?!

However, I always think it best to future proof yourself.. why get a 5.1 set to later replace 3 of the speakers? It seems a waste of money and speakers.

Try and fork for the 3 nicer LCR monitors and go a woofer size smaller for the Ls/Rs. Like say, the KRK Rockit 8's for the LCR and the 6's for the back.

If you can, try and get a stereo job with the LCR and use that cash to help with the upgrade.

Also, you might also want to consider a theater-in-a-box (consumer 5.1) for the living room to check your mixes on as well.

Nobody likes this advice, but, do you have the work, or are trying to get the work? If you are trying to get the work, why do you need 5.1? I think you don't. How much edit in 5.1 are you doing? How much TV work do you have where you are doing it in 5.1?

5.1 is a BIG investment of learning and money. More than being able to afford HS50's.

Unless you have a lot of money, I would not subscribe to : build it and they will come. Build slowly.

If you have to buy, buy the best you can.

If you have to look, look at the Blue Sky.

Just one experienced guys opinion.

Thanks for your words Tom.

I actually have a quite good number of works/jobs. I`m in Brazil. High taxes, up to 60%, so something that is cheap and on entry price on US/EU is quite a money here.
My jobs are fine to me, to support my family and a have nice live style, but not that good to invest. I agree with you. 5.1 is a big investment.
But as I said when I need I rent a big studio.
I just planing a new step a nice/average room to edit and do some mixes.

thanks anyway for your advice.
cheers

I agree. Especially concerning Blue Sky. You can get a 2.1 Sky System One setup relatively inexpensively that will be excellent L/R monitors and then later buy 3 more Sat 6.5s and a BMC when you are ready to go 5.1, giving you a top notch surround system. I find the Sky System Ones translate incredibly well to a dub stage for a small speaker system if set up properly.

Hi ggegan and Tom, can you give an ideia on Genelecs 8030A?
Do you have any experience with those?

I`m not very used to it.

I`m used to JBL cinema speakers, and Tesseract. At small studios the old and good NS 10.

I found I can buy it through B&H at considerable good price.

I know a lot of people who like the 8030s. I have used them for nearfirelds to check TV mixes and they sounded very good when I was sitting in the sweet spot, however, the sweet spot seemed very small to me. The sound changed pretty radically when I moved back or to the sides. That is okay if you can always sit in the correct position, but if there is a client with you it is going to be a big problem because they will be hearing a different mix.

Re: Monitor Budget

Gggan i think this issue is more related to the acoustic treatment of the room, then the model of the monitors.

This was on a very well designed dub stage. I have heard other near fields on the stage that had a much larger sweet spot.

Anyway, it sounds like you want to buy the Genelecs, so go ahead. Many people love them.
