Dream sequence

I'm working on an eternal dream sequence at the moment. I've used delays and reverbs but I must admit it sounds a bit dull and cheep.

Do you guys have any tips on how to make a voice in a dream sound more eternal and distant without sounding like a reggae hit?

Modulation, doppler and some nice swirl'y panning on the actual fx returns has worked for me in the past, leaving the voice that bit cleaner. Have you tried the reverse and made ambient/on-screen fx the ones that are dreamy sounding with only minor fx on the voice....

I have reverbs that are much fancier, but for dream and thought-balloon type stuff, I really like the SPX-90.

I would try rendering an effect on reversed speech, then un-reversing the audio.

Failing that, add a harp glissando

Try cutting some low frequencies before you hit the reverb. Kinda AM radio lo-fi before the verb.

Yep.

...And with the right settings, it does a really cool thing for low strings' pizzicatos that gives ya that "Desperate Housewives" thang.

(Gawd, I can't believe I just typed that.)

Learn how to say everything backwards, record it, then reverse it, so it's forward but sounds backwards. Like the midget on Twin Peaks.

I've had lot's of fun running anythign through TL Space's color and effect IR's. they have an ambient drone like quality . Try that, you might be impressed.

on that tip... I'd add some drone stuff underneath. i know this is stepping into sound design, but it helps lay the environment down
