panning techniques

hey guys - how do you make a noise seem like its coming from off the side of the screen...simple panning doesn't really do the trick - what other techniques are worth trying?

Thanks For any help!

EQ is step number one. Play with your eq to add a little distance. Then play with a verb to create depth. I like to leave 90% of the DX in the C channel and only give a taste left or right. The DX should always be stuck to the screen and hard panning will not give you that result.

You can also play with Pre fader reverb sends. I will sometimes only use wet signal from a verb for off screen DX. ALTIVERB!!!! Pan your Dialogue into the reverb until. That'll fill out the space amazingly.

Practice, practice, practice!

What do you mean by "noise", and what speaker arrangement are you using - LR stereo? 5.1?

Thanks Andy - i've experimented with linear phase EQ and tried panning the return which works nicely - Altiverb looks like its got some tricks up its sleeve! What do you mean by "DX" ?

Cheers

DX, Dia, Dial, Dialog and Dialogue are all interchangeable.

DX is a term some people use to label Dialogue that is in it's "ready to be mixed" stage. My layout is typically:
DX1
DX2
DX3
DX4
DX5 and so on.

Wet-only wide reverb and other toys that play with phase are the only tools for the job AFAIK, but they will work only if the listener is in the dead center, or wearing headphones.
