Thread Starter | Help fneeded for a beginner sound designer
Hi all, I have developed an interest in sound design, but not in the sense of wanting to go out and record sounds etc for films. Rather making the sounds from scratch, for example using Ableton. I have a lite version of Ableton and access to Pro Tools M Powered. Where would one be recommended to start. are there any sounds that are relatively easy that abeginner shoudl try to create? or tutorials anyone can recommend ? |

It sounds as if you are more interested in designing (and I suppose selling) sounds specifically for apps like Ableton or Absynth etc., not in using them for post-production like Films or TV. Is that what you mean?

I think thats more like what he wants to do. Fine a softsynth with a strong user base and that is open to commercial presets being sold and go for it. Thats an interesting world and if you can get your sounds in some big hits you can then move into sound design for the companies themselves or stay indie maybe doing private contracts with major artists. Enjoy.

Personally, I'm finding Native Instruments (specifically Absynth and Massive) are take care of the lion's share of my synth needs. I broke out my Matrix 12 today to make some rumbles and spooky wind though! |

Cool, thanks for the replies. Yeah I be more inclined to be 'making' of the sounds so to speak. I'd love to have a go at syncing them up to video but not sure what I'd need for that at this stage. So just from the few posts in this thread I guess getting into some basic synth programming would be the initial steps to take ? Has anyone ever created and sold sounds ? |

| I have, but in a different way than you mean. I'm currently working on a project where I'm making user interface (UI) sounds for a company. You know, like when you scroll on your PS3 it makes those little navigation sounds? I pretty much made the sounds using software synths, but also used some "real" sounds as well. I also made many of the UI sounds for Apple's OS9 a while back. I believe I used vise-grips and a solder sucker! I don't think there are a lot of people designing software synth patches...some people clearly do that, but I doubt that's all they do. I don't think there's enough work for anyone to do that exclusively. I may be wrong about that though. |
