I have, on two different occasions, been told that the client wants "that sound that Minas Morgul makes when the army marches out" (I assume that's what you're talking about), and when I give them the sound verbatim, off the bloody DVD in the second case, they say "naw that's not it!"

Try a sign wave seeping from 30 to 20 or something -- don't be afraid of using something nakedly tonal or synthetic.

routing percussive or sustained sound elements to the LFE channel with filtering and sometimes sharp resonance can get that effect- but it is entirely dependent on the non LFE material to be huge-

You might also try different time alignment to hone the effect- sometimes moving the LFE element ahead or behind the broadband elements can make a huge difference in the effect.

Haha sounds about right....... out of interest did you tell the client that was the 'exact' sound and how close to the exact sound was what they 'actually' wanted?

Absolutely not, I was not sent here to shame clients. If they bought it, I'd just replace it with something I did that sounded the same -- but I was quite certain they wouldn't buy it.

They didn't want the LFE boom as much as they wanted the emotional impact of Frodo watching Sauron's armies from the Steps; since this particular project was a 15 second Internet spot for Dark Knight-themed Reese's Peanut Butter cups, I was pretty certain that I would never have to worry about replicating the psychological (or technical) effect.

You spend some time pitching & mixing with a sub harmonic synth...

or here's one of my short cuts:

Just Boom Trax (2 CDs & 2 DVD-ROMs) [50092] - $395.00 : Sonic Science!

+1 for Lowender although its based on Pluggo which is now defunct - we've also had some success with stock synths within Reason or Applied Acoustics Ultra analog synth

This set is one of the libraries I created for Sound Ideas.... Its a truck load of work I did compiling real and created LFE sound and then mucking with them for hours to make them usable for editors... Just remember NEVER play these sound Sfx at a loud level on speakers other than subwoofers.... If you do you'll be watching speaker cones launching across the room...

cheers

first of all, if you' re not listening on a system that can reproduce a lot of energy at 20-40 Hz forget about it, you'll never get that experience. If you're doing this for a TV spot it's pretty pointless.
