3d pictures; surround sound. Ideas?

Trying to start an ideas thread here. I'll start with my observations and thoughts then open it to go wherever it will.

-Surrounds been around for a long time. In normal 2d cinema, the sound isn't sourced where the pictures are placed in the visual field. Its a flat screen with a 3d sound field which paints what it would sound like if it was in 3d. Our brains make the connect, and don't mind.

-Avatar. You sit twenty yards from the screen and stare INTO the picture. Yet the surround ecompasses YOU where you sit. Once again our brains make the connect.

I realise I've expressed this poorly, but if anyone can see what I'm trying to say and can pus hthe discussion along, I'd be fascinated.

A surround sound field that matches a semi surround visual field?

It is already being done on a regular basis- the idea you are describing though is much more involved, becuase you cannot do multiple mixes for seating zones of the theatre unless the audience was using headphones or special inseat speaker systems. When I worked on the Simpson Ride, we did do stuff like that, but thankfully our audience sat within a 10 ft square area.

Funilly enough, I stumbled onto this company's website today! It claims its Sonic Wave I system can enlarge the listening zone of conventional surround sound and enable perfect audio imaging for all listeners. Not sure how they do it or if it even works but it seems to have been used in several interesting occasions/events which do seem to give it credibility!

Have a look:
