Thread Starter | Rope and Wood "creack-creating" device
Hi Guys, Years ago, I have seen using a (handheld) device with which you could easiy produce (and control) Rope creacking/stretching. I remember it having some sort of "Y"-structure, with inbetween the two top sides a twisted rope. Then there was a Wood-creacker which had a round stick (with handle) that was squeezed in a hole that could be tightened by a butterfly nut. It shouldn't be too hard to make the wood-creacker, but I am at loss about the rope-stretcher. Is there anyone who could provide me the design or photo's of such devices? Thanks Fredo Temple Of Tune Belgium |

I believe one way is 2 leather straps side by side mounted very tightly between two posts with a small wooden ( 1 foot long-ish) pole slipped between the straps. Then by slowly turning the pole the straps are twisted together, tightening the leather straps and creating a creaking sound created by the twisting leather. basically its getting the leather tightened up and rubbing to create the creak. cheers geo

Hey Fredo, haging out at the wrong forum? ![]() Georgia is right about the leather straps mounted on posts. I once worked with a foley artist who had something that looked like the device she described. It sounded pretty good too. I have used an old leather belt for this before. What you need to do is wrap the belt (make sure it is long enough and remove the buckle) around a post at one end and a stick at the other, then start twisting the stick until you hear it creaking. As far as wood creaks are concerned, I have a loose floorboard at the studio which is perfect for that. Mail me if you want some sounds. I have used that for old ships, forests, rocking chairs, a creaky roof, etc. Cheers, Chris |

But those old thingmajings are much more fun. I wish I had any of them. What I do have is this reat creaking mikestand that I'll spend some time torturing tomorros if I can find the time. It makes the most damned ceaking metal sounds. Good fun!

Thanks for the responses so far. As far as sounds go, we do have a gigantic library, but these devices are needed to "perform" these sounds to the action. Much faster, much more accurate than editing SFX together. Fredo |
