Glossary for faster search?

Hi people, I've been working in post-prod for about 4 years and I'm starting to do some sound design.

We have a huge sound bank, home made and commercial, we use soundminer.

I was wondering if there's a site with a glossary that would contains all the terms used in a sound bank and a description of the word.

Swoosh, woosh, swish.... that kind of stuff.
English isn't my primary language so it's not always easy to know how to search for specific sounds.

A glossary would help a lot probably.
thanks

Sorry to say, I don't know if a glossary is going to help much with those kinds of words. They are 'onomatopoeia' which means words that sound like the thing itself when you speak them. If you say the word out loud, that will give you a good idea of what kind of sfx it is, in other words, a 'swoosh' is going to be an enveloped white-noise variant (like a spaceship pass-by) and a 'swish' is going to be lighter and quicker (like a golf-club swing) and so on. I hope this helps a bit.

I might add that there are a lot of inter-office (studio) phrases that you might agree to use. there really is no standard.

Thanks guys.
What I find difficult about that stuff is that I don't really know those "onomatopoeia" yet but anyway, I'll have to learn them some way or another.

I may have made this sound harder than it is. Onomatopoeia just means that saying the word sounds like the noise it's describing, like "buzz" or "hiss" or "moo" which all sound like the thing they mean when you say them out loud. The way to learn them is to say them out loud - what you hear coming out your mouth will be similar to the sound in the library. Hope that's a little clearer!

Yeah I understood and it makes a lot of sence, it's just a bit more difficult cause englih isn't my primary language so it can cause confusion sometimes.

Anyway, I'll get used to it with some time, I was just curious if such a "database" existed.

thanks
