Broadcast HD TV stereo audio hard to hear?

Sorry if this is too off topic. I didn't want to join AVS just to post one question and this is a community i am more familiar with. I figure there have to be SOME AV geeks over here.

Does anyone know why broadcast TV HD shows have audio that is harder to hear on a normal stereo TV? I don't think it is just a volume issue (though, that is part of it) but it almost sounds like we are hearing only part of the spectrum of the audio or 2 of 5 surround channels. So we turn the TV way up but it still lacks definition. (ps. i'm only 33. not deaf yet.)

Admittedly our setup is weird: Mac Mini using a Pinnacle USB TV tuner, but my parents have a "normal" TV setup and HD shows are much more muted in the same way. If we watch stuff through Hulu, or download AVIs, or watch DVDs, the audio is fine, but broadcast HD TV is sometimes hard to hear.

Thanks for your advice in advance.

While anolog broadcast TV utilized audio processing, Orban for example,
Digital broadcast TV and most cable only channels do not. I find the inconsistent levels annoying.
