It's all relative, all of the RED's competitors, short of the SLR mopic packages, are in the $100k range. That a RED shoot would lack a mixer is not surprising, it's a bargain-basement camera.

On the other hand, I've worked on 7D shoots that had a mixer running a Sound Devices and four channels on every take. They were an AWFUL, incompetently-recorded four channels, so merely having a mixer-in-name isn't a solution either.

Good point.

I'll be mixing a 5D shoot tomorrow with a 4 channel Sound Devices setup, minus the incompetence I like to think!

My experience with the RED crew is that "hey we just built it and it takes ok pictures...y'all figure out your own workflows." For instance, how easy would it be to have a smart slate zap a fricking SCENE AND TAKE to the file instead of C001_A162d_1104_0912. ?

And yes, 4 channels of guide audio. Wonderful. Hey we never meant it to be used for anything but guide...

I just love hearing of these things shot on a STILL CAMERA.

And no, you are correct, "just" having a mixer doesn't entail good results.

As a post mixer, I still find myself wishing Waves would finish their X-Suck and X-Performance plugs.

Oh don't got imposing your stuck-up, bureaucratic workflow on the artistes. I've done feature-length motion pictures where the clips were literally "break up scene_107", "driving_to_jt_2 REDO.01". The editor in that case had come out of webseries reality programming, and it worked for him. Me not so much, but you end up dealing with clients who literally don't know what dialogue editing is or can do, so the balance of the Force is maintained.
