Need Simple Speakerset next to my Hi End speakers

Dear all,

For the past few months I've been mixing TV shows on regular base. As you all know its always easy to have a set of cheap speakers next to your hi-end set of speakers. I really need these as the levels always sound a little different on TV than on my setup here. It was not a matter of sound processing of the TV station but the music was a little too high in level when the voice over came in... On my PMC speakers it sounded very good but on TV it was a little too high...

Anyways, what I'm pointing at is that if I was able to listen to a very cheap set of speakers this would help me to get the mix better. Now I was wondering if any of you has some suggestion on which cheap set of speakers to use or what I should keep in mind buying one. Are a set of Logitech computers speakers interesting to use?

Thank you all for your time.

Best regards,
Tim

i use a pair of auratones which i already had from my recording engineering days, to compare stereo mixes, they have also proven helpful for checking dialogue and reverb levels. i also use pair of cheap harman kardon computer speakers (probably similar to your logitech) to test reference quicktimes before i post them for approval. a lot of people use their tv's or whatever display they have for picture.

Hi guys,

Thank you very much for your help. These are the speakers I was looking for! I was already was browsing the internet for some time but without any result. It was easier to find Hi end (main) speakers than this type of speakers :-).

Thank you,
Tim

We have PMC's and I find that music volume decreases on tv and small speakers. Limited bandwidth = less bass and top end .... something that music usually has more of than dialogue.

Beware music with lots of mid-range (distorted guitars etc) and songs with lots of room in the middle of the stereo image... room you'll loose in mono and when listening from the back of the room.

I can flick to a small tv and / or mono with one button whenever I'm unsure. But at the end of the day you have to make an educated guess with your judgement and experience

There was a sort of natural reverb when firing at the Behringer and it sounded sweet to my ears.

I use the Pyramid. It has that oval speaker like in most newer TV's and the cabinet is plastic so it has a bit of "tv resonance" to it.

Getting to be a bit of a dinosaur in terms of its use, but if you happen to work in a room that has an actual television in it; convert the mixer/router outputs to RCA / TV ins and give that a run.

It's always been one of my references, for that nice plastic lowmidrangey honk sound. And yeah I've heard good things about Pyramid also.

I also use a 32" Vizio that has a nasty 500Hz resonance, talk about real life monitoring!!

Yeah I had an "Olevia"in my last room that was good for that. It also seemed to have some sort of built-in compression (even with all audio settings set to flat with no processing). It was also good for easy "world-izing" pre-Speakerphone era.

Thank you all for the tips and tricks... I guess this is the best way to do it.
Currently I'm still building up everything piece by piece... that can take a while if you only want Hi-end equipment. As I also mix radio comemrcials and TV Commercials the Mixcubes are something that I need for these mixes too....

I recently ordered the Samsung LED TV but I think this might already sound too "good".

About PMC's, I'm using the TB2S-A set and I bought these 3 years ago when I was only doing Voice Over Recordings... Now that has changed a little and I miss a little of warmth....

Thanks,
Tim
