Thread Starter | My band is scoring a play
I'm in a band from Washington, DC.
We're working on a few different albums at once for planned 2010 release. One of them is the score to a play called suicide.chat.room. The soundtrack album will likely be called Sorry You're Here, which is a common greeting from the namesake usenet groups.
Never done this kind of thing before. Learning a lot. The theater company is one who I respect tremendously and have enjoyed many of their plays. This is an early draft theme from the score. Listen/download/share for free. May end up discarded. The play is still taking shape. May never be heard again. Who knows?
Some of this play takes place in Japan, hence the vaguely Eastern character of the string section melody. There is also a slightly "formal" property to this theme as well. Japanese culture has a wholly different relationship to suicide, in all respects: religion, the law, social regard.
The subject of the play is delicate and intense, stating the obvious.
Some of what I have learned in researching the work... I hope to push out of my head when the project is completed.
Anyway, enjoy. Work in progress.
cheers,
c

Unless the theater is setup specially, which most theaters that present plays are not, your music is likely to play in mono. You better check with the theater tech people.

Good point!
Yes, the theater sound system is in stereo. I have been there while they are rehearsing.
The choreographer for this play is very gifted and imaginative.
Theater is an interesting process. Shares some aspects with rock'n'roll, but diverges in some key areas!

Chad,
I found this score clipping because earlier today I followed a link to your band Beauty Pill. I really enjoyed listening to your band on Myspace...
I think this score is really amazing. Congrats on the wonderful work. Keep it up. The string arrangement reminded me of Jonny Greenwood-esque quality level.... seriously.
Cheers!

Thanks for the kind words! Much appreciated. Means a lot. Never done this kind of thing before, as I said. A new world for us.
Will post other excerpts at some point. A lot of the material will be discarded in the finished work.
cheers,
c

Thread Starter | Taffety compiled a trailer out of early rehearsal footage. I think it has a nice, rough kinetic to it.
The play deals in themes of loneliness, desperation, the shifting idea of community in the technological age, etc. It is a surreal survey from Shakespeare to modern U.S. (and also Japanese) culture. The script is distinctly post-modern and fragmented in a skillful way. So we felt the rhythmic aspect needed to have a kind of a subtly dubby, aleatoric, hall-of-mirrors quality. Everything slightly tilted. All the music has a slightly shadow-dappled characteristic.
Some of the music is melancholic and melodic. Some is frantic and noisy or abstract.
We will release this work as a compiled soundtrack called "Sorry You're Here."
The title is taken from an actual common greeting in suicide support usenet groups.
There is also an unrelated full-length song album and a 12" EP on the way soon.
I am enjoying my SSonya sabbatical!

Nicely done!
Stereo is cool, but note how those seats outside the sweet spot will sound.

That's a good point. They're working on the logistics of the sound system this week.
Play debuts a week from today!
It's remarkable how much gets put together in the last few days in the theater world. I am learning a lot.
If you're in DC, come see the play!
Thanks.
cheers,

Thread Starter | The press has been extremely kind.
If you're in the DC area, come see the play. Ends the day before Valentine's Day. Somewhat poetically.
