Car passing by layers

Hey Guys,

So I'm working on the sound design for a 6 minute short at the moment. I for once have the leisure of going about the sound design over the course of a few days rather than hours which is great :D

I have this shot that focuses on a shop from the other side of the road. It's not a busy road, more pedestrian. One car passes by as the lead character walks in. I've tried a number of car pass by sounds and whilst they work... ok, they just dont do IT.

Any recommendations on layers to add to this to sound more convincing? I'm talking grit at the point of center position to give the perspective that there is a car 2 feet from you...

Thanks

Neil

There are hundreds of car bys available online and in libraries. You can also foley some extra street grit if you really need it. If you still can't find what you need, go find a quiet street and record it yourself. If you need some extra grit, throw some sand or road salt down. Cornering cars also tend to give you a bit more grit if needed.

So you're slow around the shop these days as well, huh?

What's the shot, exactly? Does the vehicle stay in frame front/back or is it a side-to-side passby? Are you able to post an image or something?

I've had a heck of a time on the last two projects which actually had somewhat of a 'tracking shot' as the car passed. Most sounds in the libraries are straight pass-by-microphone recordings which don't work for that kind of thing.

At least it got me out in the field to do some recording again!
Because the best part was one project didn't bother rolling sound on the one particular shot. MOS. "they'll do that in post". Thanks.

Haha, yeah it's really slow at the moment. I'm really early in my career too, and trying to get into one of the big london film audio places is a nightmare - there's nothing around at the moment - a lot of places are struggling :/ Guess I'm lucky to have a job in audio at the moment though

It's a side to side left to right pass by, at a slight angle (left being slightly further away than finishing position to the right) It's easy to edit a stereo left to right pass by to suit the shot but it's lacking the dirt that you'd want. I've added in a jeep pass at the point of centre really low level to give it a bit more size, but still looking for a nice bit of grit for the tyres... I like Rick's advice on cornering cars - thanks for that!

Yeah for close-bys I always have a gravel layer. Helps with the realism, I find. Depending on speeds, etc. yes you can get some swerves, etc.
(and if you're using another vehicle, you can usually roll out low end so it doesn't interfere with your main tracks, and leave you with the grit)
