Post Prod. & OMF Workaround?

I get a little bit of work doing post production, but not enough to justify buying DigiTranslator (to allow me to import OMF's into Pro Tools). I've installed the demo on every computer in a 10 mile radius, and the last one is about to expire. Does anyone know if there's another program that will open OMF's, and allow me to export the raw audio files into pro tools?

Or... is someone willing to sell me their Digitranslator for relatively cheap?

Thanks!

know anyone running nuendo, cubase, sonar or DP, they can all open OMF's

you can buy cubase sx or sonar4 for less than the digi unit, you might find you like NOT being tied to digi hardware too thumbsup

great... will look into it. i'm assuming that in nuendo (or whichever i end up with) there's something similar to "consolidate selection" that i could use to spit out tracks of equal length (for easy importing into pro tools)?

thanks again!

I've considered such a move several times myself; the problem with using Nuendo or something similar is that OMF exports from a video editing workstation such as FCP or Avid comprise volume maps and crossfades as well, it's not only the raw audio files spotted at the correct timecode; if you consolidate the raw audio files in the OMF composition with something like Nuendo you may not be able to edit or open back crossfades done on some tracks in picture editing: provided that the picture editor left enough audio material at the edges to actually perform the cross fade, usually the crossfade capability of video editing workstation is poor compared to those of a DAW; plus, volume maps give you a basic understanding of what the editor and the director had in mind for sound when they edited picture, which is a good guide track or starting point.

I know, and it drives me up the f#@]ing wall too, but I belive Digidesign has us by the balls with this. This is why I'm seriously considering switching entirely to another app that doesn't pose all of the limitations that PTLE does on my workflow, and doesn't cost 10K for an entry level system; Nuendo has all of this built in (plus a slew of other obvious key features that Digidesign have you pay a premium for), seems to run fine on Digi's hardware...I'm giving it a try.

Hope this helps

hmmm... see, when i get omf's, they never have volume info. all faders appear at zero. as for the crossfades, you're right. that's why i tell the video guys to give me 3 second "handles" (that's what they call 3 seconds of hidden region that i can trim tool with. i'm not a video guy).

follow up question: looking on digi's website last night, it looks like you can no longer buy digitranslator by itself, but rather part of the dv toolkit. now i have to spend $1000?!? dammit!

is this true, or can you still just buy digitranslator alone? digi's website is a real pain. needs a re-design.

I heard Digi's business model revolves around a 30% re-investment by users every 3 years so I guess this is just part of that model...

Audio post question regarding OMF 2.0

Hi Post-Pro SLutz,

When opening an OMF 2 (created by an AVID system) file in Protools I don't get the
volume automation with it. Anyone has an idea what could be wrong?

Thanks everyone

Julian,
Make sure you select "convert clip based gain to automation" when importing the omf. If that doesn't work, then something was set correctly when the omf was exported in the Avid.
Hope that helps.
Best,
