All clips of a resolution of 480p and up are in fact H264 in an MP4 container. There are lots of Youtube downloader programs, and the downloaded files are easily converted by Quicktime Pro or MPEGStreamclip for example.

Wow this is so awesome. I can't imagine how long it would take me to do something like this. Anyway, I can't wait for Tron to come out. The star wars one was great too, especially the lightsaber effects!

Did you ever manage to finish the tutorials you were working on as it would be a great help to see your methods before i receive the first cut of the film?

I'm very sorry that I missed your post. Thank you very much for the kind words.

Ableton is a great platform for audio in general. Its very intuitive once you get your head around all of the features and functions as its slightly different way of thinking than your conventional DAW applications.

I find it to be incredibly useful for sound design...editing. Think of it as one big plugin with a load of options and parameters. It has some of the best time stretching on the market. I did record quite a bit of footage walking through the various aspect of the Tron Legacy sound redux project... however time since than has been insanely busy at the studio. We shipped Front Mission Evolved several months ago.. and immediately after production have been hard at work on the new Green Lantern game. Its been well over a year... and I can only say I'm completely sorry for failing to deliver.

I'll see what I can do in whatever free time. I'll just toss the unedited versions up need be. I recorded one video where I show how to properly import a video...setup hot keys for dropping markers(locators) for quick spotting...and lastly to properly configure Ableton's time line to reflect the appropriate time code of your video.

Stay tuned.

May I ask, how do you go about getting these video clips to do your sound effect mockups? Can you simply download them off YouTube or some other online resource? I'd like to put together a reel for sound design (I do a lot music for post but want to expand and always loved sound design), I just wonder where to get good quality clips like that (ie: movie trailers, commercials, etc.)

Thanks and keep up the good work!

Krou

Thank you! What I ended up doing for both vids is downloading a high quality avi/mov from the publishers site. In the case of the Tron Legacy Trailer I grabbed it from apple.com/trailers. The Star Wars Deceived trailer was taken from the Bioware site. I find the quality a little better than ripping directly from youtube.. However I can't speak on whatever new ripping apps are around these days... its been over a year since I did these. Hope this helps.

And thank you again! Give Ableton a Try... You will be thoroughly impressed. Another tool in the belt of many.

I'll be quite looking forward for your tutorial Chis.

Am I correct you worked on the game Messiah? I had an absolute blast playing that many years ago, good work!

Great Job Houseplant! I'm using Live for sound design more and more these days, but as you have stated, the inability to nudge or have a timecode grid is a big problem. two little features that could really raise it's profile as a tool for this type of work. are you listening ableton?

Just saw Tron: Legacy last night in 3D, and I must say the sound design was pretty fantastic, not to mention the visuals. I also found the score, mostly by Daft Punk, to be very fun and appropriate. Lots of arppegiating vintage synth sounds. Below is a link to a SoundWorks video on Vimeo where they talk briefly about the sound design. Pretty interesting.
