In my opinion, I think 720p looks better than 1080i, but, as even you say, this is opinion.

Personally, I find SD horrible to look at on a big screen. I find 720p much more acceptable. True, I would say 1080p would even look better, but at some point I have to make a trade-off between data bandwidth out of the computer and resolution.

My point about the black bars at the top and bottom is relative to what I downrez to. If I received a file that was 1080p and wanted to play it on a SD firewire output, I'm going to have to convert it. It makes no sense to convert on the fly (which it does) because the conversion is HORRIBLE and you are still having to pull a lot of data off disk. (I tried this, I took a 720p video, brought it into protools and sent it out the firewire. I was less than impressed with the quality).

If I just convert from 16:9 to 4:3 it's going to be squashed. Personally, I'd rather look at the image as it should be when I am working on it for hundreds of hours (aspect wise).

If I take that 16:9 image and convert it to a format that fits SD at 4:3, I'm going to have to scale the image in the Y direction putting black bars above and below. Therefore, now my source image that could have had 720 horizontal lines now has some percentage less that 480, which is definitely going to look a lot worse. Sure you have 480 lines (or 576) but if you are working with wide screen source material, you aren't going to be using them, unless of course you don't mind a squashed image in the X direction.

I wanted a bigger LCD because the director and producer like to come over to my studio and sit behind me and watch. On a smaller screen, it's just not as useful. Having a bigger image, to me personally, really helps to give more to your immersion into the material with the sound. (Not to mention, it's a lot easier to watch big lips when you are doing some hand ADR placement!)

And hey, I didn't think you were starting a war

For all of our runs to the LCD monitors, we use CAT5e/6 extenders for HDMI/Component and VGA It's a lot cheaper than having to run hundreds of feet of cable with amps!

Hi
Right now I have my video card full, running 2 LCD screens in control room. Now I have installed a new Plasma panel in recording-floor for voice Dubbing. I know that I can also take video out with Firewire but in that case I will loose video option in control room as protools do not play video simultaneously on desktop while playing through Firewire out.
Now please let me know how i can give video to Plasma panel as both the slots are with LCDs ?

regards

Use video out of firewire with a canopus interface or a decklink card and split the video signal to 2 or more screens.

+1

Anything more than SD (PAL/NTSC) is called HD.

Since i worked many years audio for video commercials with an avid mojo via firewire and analog signal, I'm aware it this is the easiest solution, but after the Lcd revolution, converting to DV the mpeg or small H264 I get, signal became muddy and squared in big size.
Now that I'm projecting my own studio, I think the Canopus is a very affordable solution (talking about the ADC110 right?) but should work the same way, which is ok since I'm "alone in the dark", but with clients/directors I'd like something more...
So is blackmagic design the only solution? Which one? How ProTools interfaces with it?

Hello all,

Slightly off topic, but I figured these would be the best of the GS members in the forum to ask. What type of projector would you recommend for a post production Audio facility?

My budget is about 2k, and I'm in a dark, light controlled environment. The distance of the throw from my desired projector position is about 35-40'. I'm looking to fill a 16:9 ratio with a screen that has about 150" viewable surface on it. Please let me know what you recommend! Thanks.

Hi,
That is a long throw for a projector priced at $2000 but I am sure you could get a new Panasonic AE4000u for that.
It looks great, is quiet, has mechanized zoom and nice color management.
But, 35-40' is a lot of real state for most inexpensive projectors.
Best of luck!

Hey Cottage Lunch,

Thanks for your reply! We've been running the Panasonic AE3000u - and we've had complaints that the image isn't sharp or bright enough. Is the 4000u a big step up?

Projection

Honestly, no.
These units throw about 24' max before the image goes limp...
For that distance you may have to spend more coin.... or move the projector which is probably a no go.

Thoughts?

Analog or Digital. I'd LIKE digital, but at this point, I'd like to see what others do.

I'm using a 32" LCD screen as a 3rd computer screen and also use it for Pro Tools video. If you have an AMD/ATI video card, check if it is compatible with AMD Eyefinity Technology (There are a few technical things to keep in mind if it is. For instance the 3rd screen needs to be on a active DisplayPort connection. Make sure you research this properly if you go this route. Feel free to ask any questions).

The great thing about this is that when I am not using it for PT video, I can use it for all sorts of other things. It's just another computer screen... One disadvantage is that PT insist on putting a frame around the video. It isn't 100% full screen.

EDIT: Oops. I just noticed how old the thread was. :-) Still the info might be useful to someone.

Hi,

I've been researching projector by using Projection Calculator Pro - Projector to Screen Distance -- and could not find any regular home theater unit that can sufficiently do 16fL / 54nits (brightness--as in THX spec) from that kind of throw distance.

Digital Projection International (Digital Projection -- Commercial and Home Theater Projectors) has many good unit that can easily do that--but none cost lower then USD 25k.

Good luck.

Hey guys,

This is all new to me, but I have the opportunity to throw up the old 32" 720p tv I've got laying around here as a monitor for video playback via Pro Tools 9. From what I'm reading here, it sounds like the best option is a Canopus ADVC110, sending 'video out firewire' and adjusting the video sync offset as necessary in PT. For these 'work' related projects, I receive video in DV format anyways, so no problem there.

So stupid question, is it possible to somehow play dvds (computers internal player) with this setup?

Thanks,
Nate

You should be able to play the dvd video out firewire.

Hi,

I'm also looking for a video out solution from PT9 (Win7) via HDMI. It feels a bit silly to convert to analog via firewire to the Canopus/Mojo and then back to digital to my LCD screen(s). I know, by experience, the blackmagic intesity pro card works fine on Mac, but on Windows, it's not supported by PT. (Altough there are Win drivers for it).
Did anyone try to make a blackmagic intensity pro card work on PC?
Does anyone know any other products that will work?

Thanx,
