Thread Starter | Video Satellite LE and Satellite Link
Digi just released this with Pro Tools 8
Read this:
---------------------------------------------------------------
Video Satellite LE
Add high-definition video playback to your audio production workflow. Similar to Video Satellite, Video Satellite LE is a software option that enables Pro Tools|HD editors to quickly and easily open and play QuickTime or Avid video, housed on a separate Pro Tools LE Mbox® 2 Micro-based computer, in sync with their Pro Tools session. Play back QuickTime HD or SD video, or connect a supported Avid video peripheral to work with Avid SD video. And because all video playback is offloaded onto a separate but synced system, you maintain the full track count and processing power of Pro Tools|HD. Video Satellite LE is coming soon — stay tuned.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Satellite Link
Control multiple Pro Tools|HD systems from one. Satellite Link is a powerful software option that allows you to synchronize and control up to five Pro Tools|HD systems as one, with near sample-accurate lock, from a single transport. With multi-master transport and solo-link capabilities, and support for the new Video Satellite and Video Satellite LE options, Satellite Link is the perfect solution for post-production and music environments with multiple operators and multiple Pro Tools|HD systems. Satellite Link is coming soon — stay tuned.
------------------------ This will change the way those of us in Post work !

They've finally unlocked surround and a good number of tracks for LE:
....
And with the new Complete Production Toolkit (Pro Tools LE only), which combines both toolkits, you can work with up to 128 audio tracks AND get 7.1 surround mixing capabilities, making it easier than ever to collaborate with Pro Tools|HD users.

Of course after I finally spring for DV tookit for the home rig they come out with surround mixing for LE. The video satellite looks promising as well. You know what would be really nice though? Folders in the bin!!!!

PT 8 keeps looking more and more interesting.
This eliminates the need for a system running VVTR (always sooo much fun) and reduces the need of a Soundmaster Atom/ION (sorry Bob)
but I'll reserve my final thoughts until it is on the store shelf

There still should be "a reason to buy" HD system - this time Video LE...
As for VVTR, my experiences are just the opposite from yours - there are 4 vvtrs running at the facility I work, the first one was installed years ago and still runs without any issue, what is more we have really good support from Mark G. (like mail with a question and answer within 5 minutes)...
... perhaps the reason is, that we are in Europe

Mark is a great guy, but unfortunately his approach is very commercial driven'.
I have bought ADR studio (and VVTR) because they offered full Nuendo integration. Unfortunately the thing was so buggy that is is plain unusable. Mark acknowledged the problem and promised to fix it several times. After months he simply said that he wouldn't fix it within a reasonable timeframe because he didn't have enough Nuendo customers to "justify" the effort. He had other things to catch up with first. Granted, at some point he offered me a refund for ADR studio, but for several reasons I preferred to wait for the promised fix. Still waiting. Has been a couple of years now ... Any takers?

| Check the Digidesign User Group, much praise, including myself.
Its a VVTR killer.
MBox 2 Micro = $250 includes PT8, or a used MBox 1 = $100
Video Satellite LE iLok = $250
An older Mac G4 or G5 with DVI out to a DVI or HDMI monitor.
Cat 5E cable from the HD rig to the LE rig.
Set both CPUs to 1000BaseT.
Nudge, scrub, FF, RW,all follows, locate to a TC on the HD, the LE follows.

Using Pro Tools 8... Awesome!!! MBox micro to a G4 with a decklink extreme card tied to house sync.
I can drive from either control surface (Control 24's) and solo one and the other mutes.
It is sample accurate.Using Cat 5 cables!!

Marti, I'm guessing you like PTs8, and I'm considering it mostly for the SatelliteLE and multiple automation lanes features.
How do you feel about the "look"? There's been lot's of comment on both sides, does it bother you at all?

| Ill jump in for Marti!! Sorry bud, lunch tomorrow??
There is a rant from someone on the DUC claiming that the fonts are too bright etc.
But when I open my ProTools, and compare it to his screen captures, it looks like it was manipulated, the white fonts on his capture actually glow, while mine are not so subtle.
I adjusted the color to a softer grey, and I have no problem staring at the screen all day.
OK Marti fire away!!

I find the look of PT8 to be easy on my eyes. Just bought a 3 24" LCD's so it helps.
As for the G4 I have a G4 Dual 1.25 with a Decklink Extreme (non hd) PCI card.
It works great. I am going to purchase a MacPro 2.8 Quad PCI-e machine and a Decklink HD Extreme card to project HI Def. Right now I am slammed working so back to dialog Predubs.
Go PT8 and Satellite LE. You won't regret it!!

hey marti,
have you tried testing it with 23.98 quicktimes (23.98 quicktime in a 29.97 session)?
just wondering if we can still work in 23.98 standard def in the short term.
thanks,
matt

Matt,
We are using a 23.98 picture (standard def) in a 23.98 session and it works fine.
Also a 24 in a 24 session in Pal.

Dear Marti,
Does the Video Satellite LE play nice with most all video file formats?
Do you capture picture from tape on the Video Satellite LE directly into PT or do you rip into Final Cut or some other recorder first?
Thanks,
N8

| Satellite with external sync
Hi
I have a hard time finding out how satellite (either running Media composer or just the lE version) works with external sync.
We are setting up a dub studio with both Nuendo and Pro Tools.
We will get
1 Mac Pro for Pro Tools
1 PC for Nuendo
1 Mac Pro for Media composer as a satellite playback slave
What do i need to sync the media composer mac to nuendo: will it accept incoming time code (with an extra Sync HD box i guess)?
Thanks
