Post Production with M-audo Project Mix

I know that PT M-Powered cannot to sound to pic, but I also have Logic Studio 8. Is Project Mix compatible with Soundtrack Pro? Or is there a way to do sound to pic in Logic.

Yes, Logic can be used for post, though PT is far more prevalent. However, let's remember that Logic supported OMF and surround out of the box (dig on Digi) and of course, Logic doesn't impose track counts either. Support for video formats rivals PT, due to the use of QT.

In fact many composers use Logic to score.

You have to remember that the system is only an extension of yourself, and so which ever tools you find most comfortable, you should use. In the end, the audio export is the same on either system.

It does support DigiTranslator 2 for OMF (500$), and you can have timecode with the famous 'session template workaround'. You can increase track count with Music Production Toolkit, but that's another 500$ for just 16 more tracks.

protools|blog - blog - Pro Tools LE 7.x vs. Pro Tools M-Powered*7.x

BTW, there's nothing wrong with Logic if you are on your own, and you do not need much interchange with other sound editors/mixers.

This means I need to switch from M-powered to LE. RIght now I'm using Project Mix to record at my home studio. and Firewire 18/14 when I go on site to record.

Any suggestions on digidesign hardware to replace this since I have to go with LE now. mbox2 or mbox 2 pro??

I find Logic virtually unusable for post (mixing). Great for scoring though. YMMV.

My suggestion would be mbox 2 pro because it connects via firewire. I had trouble with the slower usb connection with the other mbox's as sometimes would get the warning that it couldn't get audio from the drives fast enough. Mbox 2 pro cleared that up. It offers a few more in/outs too.

Were u using mac or pc, usb 1.0 or 2.0.

I didnt want to get an mbox pro, bc I have a firewire 18/14 for my mobile gigs. and Project Mix for my gigs at home. But I want to get into Post at home, but was told by a Digidesign rep that Mbox doesnt support the DV tool kit. He said I should get the micro and use the 18/14 and Project mix for interfaces.

But will Pro tools use the converters in the M-audio hardware, or the converters in the micro(which are probably lower quality right?)

Was using a Mac Mini with USB 2.0 and a firewire drive for audio. DV Toolkit will work with mBox 2 Pro according to Digi's own system requirements. The Micro is basically a USB dongle and has an analog output only. If you're using it for post you're going to be editing in the box and outputting a file....so don't know if the converter in the Micro will matter that much. If you're not worried about time code and don't think you'll be importing OMF files via DigiTranslator you don't really need DV Toolkit.

with my little LE setup ive been fine with the mbox two and only the digitranslator plugin and not the "toolkit".
but i planned/sketched up the mix and tracks and everything beforehand (with paper and pencil) to stay clear from the max track count problem

PT MP and LE don't do multi-path audio ( > stereo ) .. so be
aware of that if you're doing post work.

We posted a heck-of-a lot of pictures years before PT had surround panners, etc!

Agreed . I'm just forewarning in case they haven't thought about it.
I had a friend coming to PT from Vegas and was surprised/pissed it didn't support
it in LE/ MP.

Also, some of the encoders are unhappy without a multipath source.

Kinda Does Now

What does it mean M-Powered does not do mix to pic? No Quicktime support?

Neyrinck has supported it for a while now as long as you put the tracks
in the right order....

Yes it has quicktime support. It locks to time code too, just no graphics related to timecode except the session setup window. A quicktime work print with a window burn is all you need and there used to be a freebee from Apple that would make one.

That is what i thought. So, just like LE. So you CAN do mix to pic with it...it is just a bit hobbled.
