Foley Mics

It's been a while since I've recorded foley, but generally I used the Sennheiser MKH60 shotgun. I found it a bit warmer and brighter than the 416 and when I needed to simulate the 416, I could put the high and low pass filters on it. It had a bit more headroom and a lower noise floor which was great for quiet sounds.

The 416 is a workhorse though and very commonly used along with the Neumann shotgun.

Coming from the music side of things, I would always try a number of mics including the D112 for loud bottom heavy sounds, the KM184 for nice ambient sounds and even an RCA77 ribbon for louder sounds. As was stated before, your room is very important and using a high headroom ultra low noise mic pre makes a big difference.

Foley can be both tedious and extremely fun and if you have the opportunity to try it, a great learning experience for any audio person.

Hi Rick, and everyone.
A little off topic, but since you brought the subject, I am curious to know what mic preamp do you guys use at your facilities. We use Millennia TD-1 (built in HV-3, in fact) and Sound Devices (SD 302 or SD 442 depending on availability at the stage), but sometimes I feel I'd like to have more gain (and less noise if possible )
Which are your choices?

regards,

EDIT: don't mind answering. It is already being discussed in this other topic:

sorry.
