Movies/short films with no Music

Hey,

I have been looking all over the internet for some place I can get a short film with no music. The reason for this is because I would really like to practice scoring for movies/television. Anyone know where to go if you want to practice that sort of thing. I would just delete the audio off of the video but then you get no soundfx or talking which would not be very useful.

Cheers!

On Craigslist you'll find lots of student filmmakers looking for someone to compose music, & often they have no budget to hire someone more experienced.

I believe "Elephant" from Gus Van Sant has no music in it. It's also an excellent film. Might be worth looking at if you're looking to practice.

it's not a film, but the TV show "The Office" has NO music except for the opening and ending credits only.

One other thing your could try... A lot of majors are released with the music score on the LR channels and only dialogue on the center. I've been watching Miami Vice recently to remove the dialogue track, sort of focusing in on the score and what sound effects they decide to mix into the LR channels. (excellent sound to whoever did this, by the way) Just hook up your DVD player direct 5.1 outputs to your board but remove the LR (maybe even the surrounds on some releases) and insert your own tracks in lieu of them.

try "No Country for Old Men" - no soundtrack music... that would be interesting for the kind of experiment you mentioned.

you can read more here .

Alternatively (and better) you can use a free Windows program called VobEdit with which you can extract AC3 stream from a .VOB (the file you find on the DVD you want to extract), then there is the BeLight/BeSweet (also free, Win), which will extract AC3 into 6 discrete channels.

I don't know what program you use to compose in, but I seem to remember that Sibelius came with a few shorts that you can compose to. Maybe other programs have something similar...

"The Wire" is a great TV serie with no music. There are some dramatic sequences that could be good for score practicing.

There was a DVD release of Toy Story that had an FX only mix. Even though there would be no dialogue you could find some short clips to use from that.

Best of luck!

Fail Safe has no music score. I understand they made a TV version a few years ago, I'd recommend the original from '64.
Would be a great exercise trying to add to the drama without stepping on the silence.

cheers

Hey,

It's not a short film but Three Monkeys by Nuri Bulge Ceylan is outstanding and has no music in it. Sound design is incredible in this film and it would be good fun to compose to.

Good luck

Nice on Failsafe, No Country, and also a good chunk of CastAway is sans music. (bless you folks for allowing sound to be displayed)

Cloverfield & Diary of the Dead also have no scores.
I think this is a great thing, as Hollywood get this so wrong so often with overbearing orchestral scores constantly banging away at me telling me how I am supposed to react to every scene.
I hate it.
I have even stopped watching films & walked from the cinema on occasion, and far too many good films are ruined by overbearing scores.

Rant, Gibber etc......sorry!! had to get that off my chest.
