good idea. let's make this a big, hot boiling, noticeable thread, then invite the admins to approve, then start a postpro celebrity hunt!

What are you guys talking about? Look who we have posting here regularly: Dr. Sound (Marti Humphrey), our own Georgia, Pascal, Charles Maynes, Tom "Minister" Hambleton, Mark "Henchman" Hensley and many others--all folks w/ tremendous experience who read the forum daily and write excellent answers to most questions that come up here. What (or "who") do you want? (I think Randy Thom has stopped by at times too, and you can certainly reach him on the Yahoo Sound Design forum. ) We even get big time music folks like Bob Ohlsson here occasionally as well.

I am open to suggestions, but like Philip just said, I think we do already have a couple of big guys around!

Yep, I think we're already pretty well off in the experience department. How about the sound team from the bourne ultimatum? or no country for old men?

I was wondering how they made the sound for javier bardem's gun the other day....

that's not the point.
bob katz, bob ohlsson, ethan winer, charles dye, and others (i'm not really into music production, so i don't know many names), are some of the most regular contributors on gearslutz. but you can't make a topic like 'mr. charles dye, please tell us what compressor did you use on ricky martin's track x'. but when there's a Q&A with him, you are free to shoot anything you want to know.
if there was a Q&A with charles maynes, i'd ask him what was the ADR sync method for grindhouse, so i know where NOT to look

I was thinking about that film the other day and I remembered the sound of a train car rattle as Bardem kills his first victim in the police station, when as far as I know the cop station has not shown to be anywhere near a train station(even if a station is shown in a shot it's the decision to use that sound that counts)which reminded me of The Godfather and Walter Murch's use of a train sound as Al Pacino guns down the gangsters in the restaurant, whats that phrase about copying from the good stealing from the great..

I hear you, but...

Why don't you post some questions for Charles Maynes or anyone else for that matter. You can put it into a form of a Q&A thread.

It would be awesome!

hmmmm, i'm really confused now.... you are a supermoderator, but what you suggest, stands opposite to my apprehension of forum ethics. the way i see it, forums are places where you can post questions without approaching and intimidating anyone personally. if you get your answer, it will be by someone who had some free time to spare and/or had other reasons to post.
i _could_ form a question like: "i wonder what was the director's approach on the sound design of 'exorcism of emily rose'", and marty d. would probably write, but my question would be kind of 'out of the blue' on a forum where we daily discuss less general, and more specific things.

Q&A's could be lots of fun. if we got kevin o'connel or skip lievsay, i'd go and rent every one of the movies they worked on, and write down hundreds of questions while watching them, then sort and pick the least stupid ones....
but 24hrs have passed since Sean L made his suggestion. i guess there is just not enough people interested, or there is simply not enough people on this forum altogether. and i'm sure many of you are not quite aware of the nature of Q&A, and all the fun and excitement it could bring....

I would also add that not only are Joe Milner and I good friends, he has a wealth of experience many here (and even on the DUC) do not realize. He has worked on a ton of films (maybe 60) and been trained by and worked with some of the best in the industry. He works on more Indy projects you may not have heard of, runs a nice dub stage in LA and he doesn't post all that often... But there is also wisdom and experience behind his (somehwat) modest posts.

I also see a lot of young cowboys come in shooting their guns off and don't take time to research first, or TRY things first before they ask for the "answer" or what is the best plug-in..... I believe that can turn a lot of established Pro's away from the forum. Yet, when people have an honest question that comes out of inexperience, I see many as more than wiling to help. And the answer helps everyone. And even the established people have lots of questions.

That said, it might be interesting to have a distinguished visitor who is willing to talk about certain projects.

Well, this thread is open to suggestions and it will remain open. So maybe there will be more suggestions.

If we know who to ask and if it is possible to get the contact info, I don't think it hurts to ask politely.

Offcourse the idea has crossed my mind before too. Only it is quite a lot of work and it's an unpaid job. The 'guests' should be quite internet addicted to take on such a job. And offcourse have some free time as well.

Offcourse we're not going to create any seperate 'pro' section.

Minister just pointed out that some pro's might steer away from reading and answering rookie questions, especially if the thread posters have bad forum manners. Luckily in this business and in this section of the forum this happens very little.

danijel,

I'm sorry if I confused you.
I'm not suggesting to break any "rules" on forum ethics, I just didn't explain it further.

A Q&A thread could be created as long as the party or parties involved are interested in being part of it just like our Q&A forums are addressed.

This Q&A thread can be moderated so, "silly" or possible "newbee" questions can be weeded out before they hit the guest or guests.

This was something I was thinking about for my forum and thought I'd suggest it here. I should have been a lot more clear about it.

Just to be crystal clear, we don't want to approach or intimidate anyone personally.

sort of a miniQ&A than.
i like that idea for two reasons:
- it would stay inside the postproduction forum, which would rule out silly questions by the music-production gearslutz;
- it would be smaller, thus easier on the interviewee.

but still, not too many interested people.

I do take your point, people are busy and as you said it's unpaid.

I am usually around here stirring things up in the political forum...

But if anyone has anything they would like to ask- including if I am available for work- I will be glad to answer what I can.... And be sure to see Horton- the best sound design I have come across in years...

cheers!
