Monster truck spot VO effect chain

I'm totally serious when I say I am stumped on how to put together a plug in effect chain to simulate a "monster truck" voiceover spot....

it's more of a parody, in a demo, so it doesn't need to sound exactly exactly, just
something of the general flavor of what the voiceover would sound like in that particular type of spot....

I'm thinking gobs of reverb and delay, but other than that....I'm stumped....

any suggestions?

First, the read needs to be agressive, and make sure it's compressed to hell. It needs some presence, but avoid sibilance--and don't roll off much (if any) bottom even if there's bassy music. In fact, if you have Waves MaxxBass, throw that on there as it will give it more oomph in small speakers. You might also experiment with pitching the whole track down a step or two.

Give it a healthy dose of slappy delay, somewhere between 90 and 120 ms with a little feedback. If you use any reverb, go dark and avoid anything long as it will wash out the articulation and punch---but you can use spots of long reverb at the ends of phrases if they ring out into a sound effect or something. Finally, you can add a little chorus or phasing (a microtuned pitch shifter works well too), but if it's going on radio or TV be very careful with anything stereo as modulation effects can destroy the size and depth when squashed to mono.

I would suggest automating the delay to kick in only at the end of sentences.

"This Sunday (sunday) (Sunday)....."

vs.

"This (this) Sun(this)day (thiSusthisnDthSunAY)"

I just did this for a spot this morning ironically enough. Same notes as above...agressive read...maybe pitch down and stretch the keywords, adding some delay as well. This was for a scratch VO. I'm trying desperately to find an actual monstertruck VO guy but have had zero luck. In Georgia, there is a very particular voice used but there seems to be some secrecy around it. Anybody know good monstertruck talent??

There's no shortage of big-voiced guys. Put up an audition call on Voice 123 and you'll get more Monster Truck guys than you'll ever want to hear!

Thinking of using Peter Cullen, but wanted to go more authentic monstertruck. I'll check out voice123. Thanks!

Holy obtuse never-ending delay, Batman. That was funny.

Here's my dilemna...

the spot is actual for Jello....we've decided to have a girl (housewife) talking about
a dessert in "monster truck style"....

so here's what I have so far....

Logic Channel EQ .. hi pass @ 30hz, +5db bump @ 5k
Waves Ren Comp .. 7 db gain, 4:1 rate , threshold -17
Wave L1..vo broadcast preset
Logic Tape Delay.... 10% feedback, 110ms delay, mix 50%
Logic Space Designer reverb...vocal ambience preset, short, mix 50%
Logic Chorus...glimmering chorus preset...15% mix, 9% intensity
PSP Vintage Warmer/master buss...heavy mulitband limiter/compressor

there's one spot to let the phrase ring out at the end, and I increased the
reverb to almost 100% mix to let it ring...

would attach a sample but Gearslutz isn't cooperating with the upload feature

I'm guessing Captain's biggest problem is that he has a girl and not Larry Huffman.

Perhaps you could use Larry's voice over the image of the girl talking..... now that would be funny.

Personal opinion for VO talent who can do this from their own personal studio.

Rich Orlow
Chris Sabat

I prefer Rich, but I've known him for years and Chris has his own studio and is usually pretty busy for smaller bookings (the guy does full anime series, video games, etc.), whereas Rich has a studio solely for his personal usage.

Just to follow up. We ended up finding the real guy, who lives in Wisconsin. The man practically mixes himself.
