my first film... festival

I wanted to spread the word and say "Couldn't have done it without you!"...... A film I worked on last year was accepted into the Florida International Film Fest. I did the music and mix for the project but really couldn't have done the mix as well without the more experienced Post.Pro contributers. Gracias!
(Does this feel like an award speech...)

Anyway.... I'm really a musician and don't know anything about the movie industry. Is this festival worth it's salt? Do you think it would be a good idea to invest in going to the festival? (I'm in my last semester of a grad degree and don't have a lot of time or money....)

I think it would be cool just to watch it in a theater and see peoples reactions.

(not fishing for congrats..... just wondering your opinion on festivals and attendence)

Depending on how far away--how much of a pain etc it is to get there I'd say it would be very worth it to hear your mix in another theatre and sweat-test it w/ a real audience. A priceless bit of education I'd say. Also, a tenet of Phil's Philosophy Re: The Care And
Feeding Of Filmmakers is that they like other members of the team to come to the premiere (anyhow) with them for support and to present a bigger target....

Congrats! The first one is always a happy moment. Dont fret over how big or small the festival is, enjoy the moment! As to spending money to go.. I'd save it for a Sundance or Tribeca, Cannes, Berlin kinda event, unless you can cajole the filmmakers into paying your way.

cheers

Congratulations! The first festival is very sweet. I agree with Georgia: unless it's cheap and easy, I'd not bother going to this one. However, since the film's in a festival, there's probably a print out there. Arrange a screening of the print in a REAL theater. There's nothing like hearing what your mix sounds like in a proper hall, as it teaches you how your room and your way of working relate to the real world.

this is the big interest for me..... unless I go to FL, I might not have a chance to see the film in a theater setting. I've watched it on several home systems (obviously not the same) and it translates very well there.

hmm.... the film maker is interested in my attendence... maybe...

Anyway... thanks again.

Congrats! I worked on my first indie film last year and it made it to quite a few festivals. I arranged to go to the premier at AFI Dallas, and it was a very rewarding experience. Crazy atmosphere, great crowd and was the first chance I had to hear something I did actually play in a theatre. Of course I took notes about how it translated which fortunately was pretty good. If you can swing it, I'd go.

Abbott's film sounded very nice!! He brought it by "The Dub Stage" to check it out and I was impressed with the mix!! thumbsupthumbsup

Congratulations! Film festivals are fun when you have a film in them. The one in Nashville usually has a lot of ancillary events that make attendance worthwhile.
