Thread Starter | Good Book Recomendations
I've posted in this forum a couple of times, I'm an established music mixing and tracking engineer, trying to transition into post. I've been hanging at a post house here in LA(a good friends a music editor, and gave me the connection). I'm learing the differences and how things are done in that world, but I'd really like to learn more of the technical aspects on my own as well, so when the opportunity for actual work arrises, I'll be prepared. Anybody have any good book recomendations that aren't too basic |

Which aspect(s) of audio post production do you want to learn about? There are lots of good books out there, from general interest movie sound to texts dealing specifically with Foley or SFX or dialogue. It just depends on which way you want to turn. Take at look at Focal Press: Welcome (post production section) for some good titles.

Sound Theory, Sound Practice, edited by Rick Altman less of a how to, more of a historical and theoretical look at film study focusing on sound, very interesting.

Another book I found useful is "Pro Tools for Video, Film and Multimedia." Much of it, particularly the early chapters, is not overly Pro Tools-centric, and includes a lot of good, practical and technical info. | |

they all have good info. Some more than others. But one of the things I like to do is to develop an extensive library for reference. Remember, everybody has their own opinion and there are many ways to get one thing done, so lots of books, lots of authors, and lots of refernce data, = lots of good info! cheers geo |

thanks for the recomendations...I'm a very experienced music audio tracking and mixing engineer, so not looking for "basic sound theories" if you know what I mean...more like advanced books on the specifics of pro tools and post

Audio-Vision by Michel Chion - an advanced theoretical book on film sound as a means of artistic expression. Inspires many ideas for sound design and mixing. I read some chapters more than once, because it's a pleasure. Recently bought another of his books - The Voice In Cinema.

One more title to add: Norman Hollyn. The Film Editing Room Handbook: How to Manage the Near Chaos of the Cutting Room (3rd edition). This it not a sound editing book per se, but it's a great guide to editing room management and processes. It's valuable for sound editors to know more about what happens before we inherit the film, and the Handbook leaves no stone unturned. This is a real Bible of what it takes to run a cutting room. |
