A good book on Dialogue editing!

Because I think some people here would be interested... I recently finished this book and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the topic. It's called: Dialogue Editing for Motion Pictures: A Guide to the Invisible Art. By John Purcell. I do mostly commercial/corporate work, but more and more indie film and Documentary stuff has been coming up lately. This book goes through this process in a very comprehensive way. Props to John Purcell. It opened my eyes to some new tips, ideas, and work flow...

That is a great book! If you look at the reviews by the readers you will see one of my Sound Editors Brad Semenoff who read the book and uses it's techniques. Also Two other reviewers are by Sound Editors i have worked with over the years, John Sisti and Harry Cheney.I have seen and read through the book and it's very good except for some of his approach on dealing with Dialog Re-Recording Mixers. You'll have to read to understand what I'm talking about.
A MUST BUY for everyone in Post Sound!!

When I had worked with Brad on a project back in San Francisco, he recommended me this book and from this point on, I will never look back and regret it.

As the author of Dialogue Editing for Motion Pictures: A Guide to the Invisible Art, I appreciate the interest I see in production sound editing within the post production forum. And of course, it never hurts to see kind words about the book! Dialogue editing is seldom taught and often misunderstood, so it’s good to have a place like gearslutz.com to discuss problems and air frustrations.
I’m happy that my book is among the tools suggested to forum members seeking cleaner, smarter, more focused dialogue tracks that help to tell a story.

Glad it helped. I agree that a thread to the effect of "Dialogue Editing Survival Skills" would be useful (I'd certainly learn a thing or two myself). However, I'd need advice on how to set up and manage such a beast. Also, I'd like to hear what people would want/expect from this thread, for I'm a real novice when it comes to forums. Any suggestions?

I'm half way through chapter 10 and have told my employer that I think they should buy one for each of the staff engineers. We don't do feature film work, but a lot of the other stuff is crucial to work flow in general and would benefit everyone!

I'm sorry to be reduced to bragging, but they just announced the Oscar® nominations, and a film whose dialogue I edited, BEAUFORT, was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. I know it's not really the dialogue editing that made the difference in this case, but it's nice to be a part of a great project with a wonderful team.
Please forgive this blast of exuberence.

Dialogue Editing For Motion Pictures by John Purcell

I find this book to be a most excellent publication.

It's a genuine tour de force covering everything from the historical origins right up to the contemporary issues of this highly creative craft.

Best of all the authors light, sensitive & often humorous touch make it a pleasure to read and easy to comprehend.

When will we see further publications from Mr Purcell?

I got this book from a recommendation, and I must say, it did fill in gaps, teach me some new techniques(never have enough of those) and gave me a good overview of the process from start to finish. I am much better prepared for eventualities now. The book has enriched my professional life, and inspired me to take up training with a film dialog editor, after over ten years of TV work. It was highly educational as well in part because of what I had previously read in the book.

Thanks. I'm glad I have a chance to thank you.

Like wise. I saw it at the Berlinale and was really moved by it. It was a very interesting take on war.

Ditto here, I just finished the book about a month ago. Many great tips and tricks. The technical data is extremely well written and the "real world" examples are a rarity in many of these books. Great job John...your effort and care is much appreciated.

I wish every film student was required to know this material.
