There isn't much that competes with Kyma.

If you want cheaper solutions, but slightly different in their concept you should look at

Native Instruments Reaktor

Audiomulch

Max/MSP

Good luck

I'd like to add two freeware alternatives: cSound and SuperCollider (consult Wikipedia for more info). There's very little you can't do with either of these, but they are programming languages and hence far from turnkey solutions.

Also Max/MSP. I take it you are looking for an app that deals w/ very fundamental aspects of computere generation and modification of sound?

Yeah, some of the other solutions have been covered. I'm still saving up for a Kyma though. Someday.

kyma is amazing.
had one for many years before i had to sell it to pay medical bills.

so easy, yet so deep at the same time.

inspiring to use with a wacom tablet... i couldn't imagine how cool it would be tho with a hakon continuum fingerboard.

the FFT stuff is unmatched in ease and power to this day IMO.

We just decided to buy a Kyma/Capybara system after our Head of Sound-design spend a lot of time on researching all possibilities. According to his research there is nothing that beats Kyma... especially if you don't want to make any sounddesign that nobody else has done before...

We went trough Reactor, Max, SuperCollider etc. and the main reason to decide on Kyma is sound quality. Especially when you do sound-design like us for features and large scale theatre... When pumping your sounds trough a multi-kilo-Watt sound-system in a quite 2000 seat theatre demands clean stuff.

It took us a while to make the decision... so don't hurry and take your time to check out the possibilities on the market. In the mean time you can save to buy the real stuff
