Talking Stereo Simulation from mono tracks

i recently had a teacher i know talk briefly about making a mono sound into simulated stereo. no matter how much i look, i can't seem to find anything online about the subject.

if anyone out there knows some tricks they wouldn't mind sharing, or if you know a place to find info such as books, magazines, websites....it would be greatly appreciated.

thnx a mil.

What kind of sound? Do you want different elements coming from the left and right speakers? Do you want dual mono? Are you trying to place the sound in a space?
There is no such thing as a stereo source. All sources are mono. What stereo allows us to do is create space. Where is the sound in space? Thats why we have two ears. Its for directionality. What kind of space is it? If you think of it that way, it may make your question clearer to you.

i forgot to take that into consideration. it would be to have 2 different sounds with completely different transients to create the stereo effect. more or less for films to make a mono effect into a simulated stereo for the space....not multi-mono.

There are many ways to do this. There are boxes (the Studio Tech AN-2) and plug in's (Waves PS22 Spread) that do this.

Another way is to mult the channel, pan them, then put a delay on one of the channels with 0 feedback. Research "Haas Effect" before you get into too much trouble.

Another way is to mult one of the channels, and place 2 graphic EQ's on each channel. Boost 3 db on one band, then Dip 3 db on the other Eq. Do this down the line.

There are also MS tricks that can be used, and variations of the ones I already mentioned.

All this stuff should be checked in mono.

I've had QC problems with the Waves PS22. It uses phase to widen the stereo field, which Lifetime Network didn't seem to appreciate. This was one of those early in the career gotcha's. Always check phase, and mono. If it's a background, cut it in half, take the second half and use it as the second channel, lining it up with the start of the first. Cut and paste as needed.
"it would be to have 2 different sounds with completely different transients to create the stereo effect."
That would be two mono sources on two different channels. Or two different perspectives of the same source. If you want to create the space for the sound, use panning and a stereo reverb. Use EQ to create distance if needed.

thank you all for the responses so far. i'd still like to know if there are any other ways to accomplish this method using, per say, a peavey 1600 console with an lxp-5 delay. i had heard of using this when i was in a recording workshop at my school, but wasn't able to get this to work.

any recomendations or a place to find info would be greatly helpful.

thnx
