Mixing levels for Broadcast and DVD

My gear-room is calibrated at -20db=0VU ( 79 dbFS at mixing position, this seems to work as i'm in a small room ).
A lot of my work is going to broadcast and DVD. I'm just curious how you guys mix for both format....since broadcast is -10db where as for DVD you can use the whole spectrum.
For broadcast, i might have an L2 on the stereo bus set at -10 db. But for DVD do you just use the same mix and reajust the L2 accordingly or do you guys have the luxury ( time and budget ) of retweaking the DVD mix ???
I notice that some folks will mix broadcast level for DVD, but i've always found this is way too low. Thanks

I usually just bypass my peak limiter that I set for the broadcast mix requirements (unless there are any loud fx that might clip 0 dbfs). I use the same mix, but the programs I usually mix have a small dynamic range. I haven't had a broadcast mix feel way too low.

I would like to hear what other people have say as well.

We use exactly the same mix for TV and DVD, except the 'DVD' mix is 9.9dB louder.

If appropriate, we route the output of the limiter (set to -0.1dB) to another stereo output and turn it down 9.9dB to give an identicle but quieter mix running alongside. We can then print them both onto a tape at the same time if needs be.

Cool?

Thanks guys for the responses,

I usually have a limiter ( like an L2 ) across the mixbuss at -10db for broadcast and use the same mix, with some minor tweak, and set the L2 at between -0.1 to -3 db for DVD.
What kind of limiter do you guys use across the mixbuss ???

Jahtao,

When you say you use the same mix for TV ad DVD...do you simply bypass the limiter for the DVD...therefore using the full bandwith...is this what you mean by getting 9.9db louder ??? Thanks

Narr mate, same mix, different delivery tech spec. Peak level: -10 on a digibeta for broadcast. Peak level -0.1dBFS if its straight to DVD, sometimes on an audio file (broadcast wave file generally aka BWAV)

-10 + 9.9 = -0.1

We don't bypass the limiter, its generally an important part of the sound of our mix.

Whether you watch the program live or buy the DVD and watch it at your leisure, you will hear the same thing. Broadcasters effectively turn it up 10dB.

Hope that clears it up for you
Matt
