Check out Soundminer (www.soundminer.com). It's probably the best SFX database app currently available. Also great support team. Soon version 4 will be released; there will be some promising new features...

Our check out Gallery's mTools (www.gallery.co.uk).

Both apps can be used with Protools, and work way better than Digibase..

cheers

Soundminer looks badass. Anyone care to explain how digibase lacks? Is it just the network thing?

I asked this same question on another board and got a lot of great answers. What is the etiquette regarding sending people to another board to do a search?

Netmix here. Better than MTools, which I was using before, but I'm guessing Soundminer is even a step-above, based on its popularity.

i'm also using soundminer. it's been incredibly useful. We even went so far as to create databases for all our stock music and enter that as well - really streamlined the searches for elements.

I've used Sound Miner, Netmix & the workspace window (digibase), could gat by with any of them but Soundminer's certainly my preference, followed by Netmix & then digibase.

Yo yo jetplane, thanks to soundboy for this (from the DUC):

------------------------------

Ever tried to audition multi-channel split-files in Digibase? .....Itīs not possible

Ever tried to control the playback volume when auditioning from DigiBase?....not possible

Ever tried to audition your library with your PT-Session interlocked in sync?

Ever checked if the long descriptions show up in Digibase when dragging a sound from iTunes to PT?

Ever tried to preview plug-ins before spotting your sound with or without the effect to a track?

Ever tried to audition your MS-Stereo sounds in L/R-Stereo and then decide if you want to spot them as L/R or discrete MS?

Ever wanted to spot just a single channel of an embedded multi-channel sound to PT?

Ever wanted to sum your stereo-sound to mono when spotting?

Ever tried to batch rename meta-data to maintain your library in Digibase?

Ever tried to share your libraries over a network? Play them back from one central server?

I could go on but so far for just a few examples.

-----------------------------

Thanks soundboy

Music Library Management

Hi mates,

hope this is related .. I'm trying to digitise our licensed Music to a server (PC) to be shared among our editors too, and maybe a limited access (ie. read only) for producers / directors to audition the tracks from a networked PC.

Our yearly license only give us about 100 CDs, and with some buy-out titles, i think physically digitising the CDs could be easily done by one person (intern?) within a week or two.

The only issue is, cataloging, naming and grouping the tracks to the correct Genres and moods.

is there a CD ripping app that will allow us to define the filenames of the ripped AIFs? ie. CD1234_t1_songname.AIF, whereby "CD1234" can be predefined by us prior to ripping, and then "t#" is automatically generated according to track number, and "songname" comes from CDDB database??

I am hoping to do this cheap (free), so I thought of using iTunes.

Anybody doing this too? I'm just wondering do i need to create a playlist from the server when i digitise the CDs.

Most of the recent library music's tracknames could be grabbed from CDDB, so I'm just wondering if it is a tedious task to enter composer name, publisher info, labels so that filling up music cue sheets would not take a whole day hunting for CDs and sleeves.

Also, what about Genres, and other infos to let the producers / directors look for their desired tracks easily?

Any tips?

Thanks!!
Regards,
[Charles]

+1 soundminer
They also make a program called ripper which will automatically embed published metadata into your ripped audio files when importing from CD's. Big time saver.

Another handy function in SM is the backup feature. Let's say you go shoot, edit and bounce and whole set of custom stuff.. then you manually add search data and descriptions for each one. You can click "backup" and all the info in your database will then be embedded into the audio file. Really great if you ever have a crash or database problem.

I havn't used any other DB software, but I'm not looking for anything else either. All bases covered. Network, password protection, instantaneous returns, spot or drag and drop to timeline. Also has a really smart search engine.

I'm updating SFX to soundminer. But my music has a searchable database from Premiere Tracks on it's own hard drive. It's not a bad system, but if you don't license any music for a while they call and call and call. I wouldn't recommend them.

I think this is possible now, its controlled via the audition output, if you'd route digibase to for example output 3-4 and you make a masterfader in your session for it, you can control the level with that. Or just use the master of output 1-2...

Hi Charles, i do exactly that. I've taken my SFX cds and ripped them to .aif format and store them on hard drive. I used iTunes to rip the discs using the CDDB titles and track names. Sometimes when using iTunes if you have a multi-disc set, disc one might come out with a different title than disc 2 or 3...since CDDB is user submitted, sometimes you're getting data submitted by a different person so you have to watch and sometimes update all tracks on a disc so they come out how you want them. I generally will allow the titles to import and then i make changes to my liking before i import them (IE i might add specific keyworks to the track titles before importing them) For example a disc of ambiences might come out with track titles similar to "city park distant traffice" and I might add to that title "birds pedestrians" and then fix the spelling of "traffic" before my import.

I then use the 'advanced search' in finder to allow multiple lines of title search so i can search files on a specific drive where the file is music and the title contains "crowd", "Large", etc etc

I also use Audio Ease's Snapper (great inexpensive utility) which allows me fast previews and fast exportation to protools, either direct to track or to the regions list 'bin'.

Overall it's low cost, extremely effective and more than anything, it's FAST. Using the digibase or workspace search will drive you nuts with it's clunkiness and slow functionality. I get *way* more done in less time using this method.

Phil

Just for the reference, I want to mention Injector (made by the Basehead people), which is a unique app - it will inject BWAV metadata & rename your already-ripped wavs, so no need for re-ripping! It does this based on it's own database which contains most (if not all) Hollywood Edge & Sound Ideas libraries. It also rips CDs, BTW.

Has anyone here ever worked with Sonoma.com 's "Total Library Solution" (TLS) application? It sounds like it has all the features that Netmix and Soundminer also have... I wonder how it compares in real life to the other two major SFX library applications Netmix and Soundminer?
