orientation video

hey guys...i'm fighting myself here...

orientation videos- i'm doing the soundtrack to one right now...

and i'm fighting myself because i want to make a huge blasting beat with crazy synths and whatnot- but its just not fitting this video..

what i should be paying attention to is just the speaker right? making sure he/she is heard throughout the video?

the video does break off to some 'b roll' of the city and what not so i should introduce music there right?

any tips/info would be a great help...

should there be a constant soundtrack to the whole film? or should i leave the speaker alone at times?

any links to orientation/corporate videos?

Your instincts are correct. Most corporate videos are really about what is being SAID--the content, and not about much of anything else. Picture and audio-musical aesthetics take a back seat here. The music sets a mood and supports the picture and dialog, and otherwise stays out of the way. Your dialog needs to be punchy and clean and understandable to people hearing it anywhere from a boomy auditorium at a trade show to off the speakers of a laptop, and it is good to keep in mind that English is often not the primary language for MANY of the members of a corporate audience today. In most of the corporate films (shorts) I work on the music does keep burbling along most of the time--it helps pull the images together and keep attention up for what is often very technical content. One of the main tricks for emphasis of a certain line or shot is actually to have the music STOP for just that duration. Otherwise, keep the music under the dialog, keep the dialog as intelligible as you can make it and go light on the SFX. There are often many layers of client approval needed for the "buy-off" on a corporate video, so simpler is usually better.
