At first I thought it would be cool to arrange files into folders - first by source (dia, libFX, foley, etc), and then by type (cars, guns etc), so that I could find them easier should I need them again in the same session. But: 1) It takes time to keep everything organized. Every time you drop a new FX onto timeline, you have to open the pool and move it to a proper folder. Sometimes you forget to do it, so after some time the root folder gets cluttered, and you have to sit and listen to all the files (or at least read their filenames) and then move them. If you have several years to finish a feature, than organize bins. 2) It is easier to find a specific file in the timeline than in the pool. Your memory will sooner recall the exact spot in the film (or the timeline) where you have that specific kaPOW, than the name of the file which is still one among many in the 'guns' folder. Chances are, it is also layered in the timeline, and you can pick up some tails, impacts and debris on the way. 3) It makes no sense managing you personal library through bins if you already use a library management program, because bins will simply never be as advanced as a dedicated software. So, the most I will do is to move all the dialogue to a dedicated folder after I import the OMF or conform, but dialog is anyway separated from the rest of the files because usually all the filenames start with the same prefix..... OK, I just wanted to tell you not to put all that much hope into bins.... CLIP GAIN!

Once you have created and selected a folder (say BG's) in the pool, all new imported files will import into that folder. So if you work in a structured way (BG's, Foley, SFX, Temp Music, etc ...) you end up with nicely organized folders in the pool. I most certainly agree that having separate "cars", "guns" and other folders is somewhat useless. Also, the nice "show clip in pool"-feature makes it easy to find any event in the pool. Best regards Fredo

And the vice-versa 'Select in project' when you want to find all the places where you have used a certain clip from the pool. I wonder if there's a similar function in PT? BTW, this seems fresh: ************************************************************

| Simple bins is all that I want. It would be great for me to keep OMF audio in a folder, SFX I imported in one, VO I recorded etc. I cannot imagine that its that difficult, unless digi is trying to skip simple bins and go into some advanced bin system like you mentioned. |

| the bins issue is something I think all PT users would like.... in the meantime, I will offer up my favorite workaround- I use soundminer, and it the only way that files get added to a session for me- What I do- is use Soundminers' preference to add a prefix to my added files- in the manner earlier suggested- like cars, guns, air, bg, etc- I then use the "find" feature to show just the prefixed material I want to go through. It is a workaround, but it does help....

| Charles, what is your naming scheme exactly in Soundminer? I've tried this in SM's Transfer prefs but it's not working for me. I'm trying to add the prefix "zfx-" to sound effects going into Pro Tools so it puts them all at the bottom of the regions list. |

| the new Video Satellite and Video Satellite LE options bring Avid® and QuickTime HD/SD video playback to Pro Tools in high definition, without sacrificing your audio track counts or processing power.... Does this mean no more VVTR ?? makes me actually WANT to purchase a new version of protools. ![]() cheers geo

even so- if you were to do a find in PT, for "zfx" those would be revealed to the exclusion of the files without that character string being present....

Rather than fighting for bins in PT, which may never happen and has just become some sort of bad running joke, let's fight for multiple sessions or sequences! | |

go to preferences-transfers in the "File Naming Scheme" dialog, you should be able to type your "zfx" as follows.... zfx{space}<Description:2> I used my own setup, because I use the description as the sound file name- the important thing is to NOT use the <> symbols, because they are variables. If you have plaintext for the prefix, it should work as expected- though if you run into further problems Steve Pecile should be asked....
