Thread Starter | Hawaii Studio build in progress!
I have started construction on a studio in Hawaii. I have been planning to build a pro studio for many years and it is all finally happening now. Motivated by the other studio build threads, I wanted to share this project with everyone here at Gearslutz. I have been renting a 1500 sq. ft. warehouse in down town Kailua Kona Hawaii for the past five months. We have done a bunch of little things in preparation for this project, such as plumbing, temporary electrical and toilet. A few weeks ago we had the HVAC air handler installed, we are ready to install the condenser and run the ducts as soon as we get all the framing done. My studio designer Larry Swist of Evenfall Acoustics flew over last week and all of the materials arrived, so things are moving now! Right now I have my father (a general contractor) a couple local workers, a few friends and Larry Swist to oversee everything. I am planning on opening doors in mid December. I'm very excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! So far we have finished the floating floor, now we are starting the framing with medal studs and expect to have all the framing done soon. A few days ago a 6.7 earthquake shook me out of bed and scared the crap out of me. This was a serious quake, I am amazed no one died. After things settled down, we went to check the warehouse, to see if everything was ok. Amazingly I lucked out, to my surprise the floating floor was still rock solid (did not shift at all) and the rest of my warehouse is fine too. There have been a series of aftershocks and I'm pretty spooked! I'm going to try to do my best to remain positive and definitely try to make things earthquake proof in the new studio! I will be posting key pictures along the way, in the end I will post some sort of link to a quick video of the whole process from start to finish. I worked with Larry Swist of Evenfall Acoustics in New York to come up with the design. Mr.Swist is flying back and forth supervising the build. Larry is a great guy and I really like his approach, I have a feeling this project is going to come out better than I expected. Things are looking great so far! More to come soon stay tuned Aloha from the Big Island Hawaii Seti Orion Island Vortex Recording Studio |

Hey Seti, Congratulations, you're finally doing it! I thought about you the other day when I heard about the quake (I don't know many Hawaii slutz). That must have been some rude awakening

Wow, Hawaii, what a great place to build a studio!! Bands can make a whole vacation out of it, and even get some surfing in when they need a break from recording! Best of luck with your new build, and yes definitely post some pictures soon if you can. |

Aloha Sricabla I will be opening with a Pro Tools Hd2 rig with the new mytek converters, Mac Pro along with a fully loaded Nuendo rig. I have a decent amount of high end analog outboard gear to get started. I'm really trying to make a 24 channel Tonelux rig happen, but my studio build is way over budget. I may have to use my 02R96 until I can afford the Tonelux. A few of my friends have some different tape machines we are going to test out, nothing to special but it should be fun. I will get at you when I got some time or you can email me setiorion@islandvortex.com |
