Seti,

If your mixes don't rock, I'm coming over there to rip everything out and taking it home. Man, you've got no excuses with a place like that!

I see the faders are in.

Barefoots in Quad?

Enjoy, it looks great. You've earned it.

To answer your question Goatie
yes my new set has the switch to mellow out the high mids a little.

Engaged it seems to fit my taste perfectly and is a nice feature to have.

another engineer I work with preferred the switch on the default position.

Seti,

Do you have an email address I could send a resume to? I would seriously love to work there. So much so that I'd even be willing to move out there from Canada for the chance to work in that amazing facility

Thanks

I am an avid reader of this thread. I was using it as an example to build my studio. I just have to say you truly did a great job with it. I also always buy the yearly mix class of ...... issue and a smile came to my face when I say your studio on the page. You deserve every bit of recognition you get. you truly accomplished a great thing as well as educating me on the finer points of studio design through your thread. Congats man! I hope you have many great sessions there.

Thumbs up Seeing the studio , Awesome!

On Vacation to the Big Island of Hawaii I stopped by to see Seti's studio
"Island Vortex".

If you've never been to the Big Island of Hawaii I should mention that it is the most
spiritual of all the islands. Landing and driving from the Airport is like being on the moon with nothing but lava rock around the road.
King Kamehameha the 1st made the island his home base and it was the sight of many bloody battles and crazy ceremonies...very heavy vibes on the lava rock -

On to the studio

I've been lucky enough to work at Henson (A&M), Ocean Way Hollywood, NRG, House of Blues, Record One and a bunch of other places so I know when something feels and sounds right and I have to say Seti's studio just feels RIGHT! He did an excellent job with the lay out, acoustics and overall VIBE...these are hard things to capture.

I walked around the tracking room and found the ceilings to be high enough for drums and strings and enough variation from wall to wall and in different corners to get great tones..the room is tight but could be made to sound wide. The iso booth had a great sound and did not have that comb filtering you get from a badly designed booth...I even recommended recording a trash kit in it - kick snare and hat compressing in a vocal booth sounds awesome!

He's got a great selection of tracking gear and a few more pieces on the way that will round it out for my needs. The ToneLux is pretty slick, it would be nice to mix there but hard to convince the clients I need to mix in Hawaii,.
Seti played me some basic live tracking roughs that he had just done and (knowing the barefoots well) I could hear all I needed to want to bring an artist to his studio when budget permits (I'm in SO Cal).

Lastly, Seti is a cool dude.
He invited me and my daughter, not knowing us at all, after a PM on this site and a phone call.

Great studio design
Great Vibe - Hawaii
Great sounds

Thanks Seti -
C

You got a gear list for that place?

Rough estimate on complete cost for construction and gear? Quite amazing really.

Aloha everyone!

Little update

1st day I’ve had a chance to post something in a while.

It’s been crazy over here working 10-17 hours a day, 7 days a week non stop.

The studio has been open a little over 4 months now, and I very happy to say I have worked out the majority of the kinks + I’m having a great time!

Busy with lots of different recordings as well as some video projects.
Just did voice overs with NBC for the Iron Man Triathlon on ESPN.

Soon I will post some samples of raw drums tracks, maybe
some Hawaiian music, maybe a little rock too if it's cool with my clients.

Thanks for the continued support everyone can’t wait to hang out at NAM or AES
one of these times…

Some new pictures coming up soon

Aloha

Great post SETI!

i can recall the days that a few studio I worked at looked like those construction pics.
I know of one that sits empty (two rooms actually.)
Sorry to sound negative.
I'd love o liberate one, but I am maybe looking at another that may come up.
It is an even better room (a classic design, world class secret.)

I so wish that you were on Kauai.
I cash in the airmiles every two years and I take the family to Poi Pu on the south beach. Same condo unit every trip.
Ironically, we spend more time in the north beach area, but I know better deals on a condo in the south.

I too noticed that there are ZERO real studios on Kauai unless they are very secret personal spaces. I do know some big name music biz that live there. Two BIG name engineers. Both are semi-retired.
I sat next to Graham Nash on the plane on the way over last Sept.
He has a place there.

We always talk about moving there and I freaked my wife out by saying, "Yeah, but what would it cost to have my stuff shipped over?"
I think that the MCI 538c and the JH24 would have to stay behind!

I can't imgine what materials cost you there.
I noticed that what my wife calls "stick houses" cost a small fortune there due to construction costs.
I can't imagine a studio like yours that it done right.
That warehouse would cost about half that here in Texas in the city.
We have a 2500 sq. ft. space out in the country that costs $850.00!!!!

Keep up the good work and HURRAH!!!! to you for having the guts to "do it right!"
Having a room is a serious endeavor in today's climate!

If I could make a buck from one I'd have a commercial facilty again.

later...
